Getting Better Sleep This WInter

Hello!!! How are you doing?? Sleeping well? This is a tricky question as daylight savings time ended not that long ago. It is a sign that we should all wake up early and soak up the extra sunlight. For some that is great and others not so well as it also means it gets darker 1 hour earlier than normal as well. In this pattern by time we meet winter solstice in December 21st the sun will set around 4:20 pm. Thus making the rays of sun hard to get.

The shorter hours of day light can interrupt even the best of sleep patterns. So what is it that we can do to get better sleep. There are a few recommendations that have been recommended by many professionals. These tips include:

  • Don't just sit around, I know those shorter days make us all feel a bit sluggish but that is even a better reason to get up and get moving. Many people will not only struggle with sleep but also gain a bit of weight. Regular exercise can help fend off the extra weight and also improve winter sleep. Those with sleep apnea have even more reason to sleep. Whenever possible head outside and exercise while getting a bit of sunlight
  • When it's cold outside many houses will heat the house with dry air from a forced air heating system. This type of heat may cause more congestion and lead to excess snoring and breathing habits that do not result in restful sleep. It is important to stay hydrated during the day and use a humidifier during the night
  • Eating earlier than normal in the winter or eating a lighter dinner can help get a good nights sleep
  • Keep the sleeping room a bit cooler but not cold while sleeping.
  • While it is tempting to sleep in on weekend mornings it is not a good idea. Getting more sleep can make it difficult to get back on track for the work week.
