The little ones that make me smile

Wrestler Umaga dies

My family has for a very long period of time been wrestling fans. The other day we read the very sad news that one of the wrestlers we had watched for a long period of time had passed. Eddie Fatu AKA Umaga passed away at the young age of 36. While Umaga made a name for himself he has many well known wrestling relatives. The Great Wild Somoans, and the now popular hollywood star Dewayne "Rock" Johnson were all relatives. Umaga joins the sadly list of wrestlers who have passed before their time. This is a very sad feat not only for the family of the wrestlers but also the fans that loved them

The Christmas Story

Happy Birthday Walt Disney with disney printables

While I am just a day late on this event it is one that I always had my children recognize when they were younger. We would color Disney characters and hang them in the windows and occasionally have a special dessert for supper that night. Walt Disney would have celebrated his 108th birthday this year. It is not many individuals who have completed and tried as much as Walt Disney.

Walt Disney was the force behind America's entertainment in the 20th century. Walt Disney's life could be read as success story conquering Americans hearts along the way. A man from the same state as I being born in Chicago Illinois in 1901. Shortly after though his entire family moved to Mississippi. It was here that he fell in love with the small towns and steam engines. Which would inspire his first character. The family would move back to Chicago when Walt was in high school and he would become the school newspaper cartoonist. Earning Walt just a bit more experience that would prove to be of use in his life. Walt would team with his brother Roy to start the Walt Disney company. In 1928 Walt would introduce his leading character Mickey Mouse and would give him voice in 1946. In 1929 other characters such as Donald and Goofy were slowly added as friends of Mickey. Walt Disney would pull the cartoon/entertainment world just a bit further when in 1937 he would introduce the first full length animated film "Snow White and Seven Dwarfs" With his success he would introduce other full length films in the next few years.

1955 would see Walt Disney opening up his first theme park where he welcomed all in Anaheim, California Other theme parks would open soon after. Walt Disney would see his success continue until his death in 1966. Yesterday was Walt's birthday and I must tip my hat and say Happy Birthday for what wondrous works you did.

Miley Cyrus feelings on New Moon

My daughter loves both Miley Cyrus and New Moon but the feelings between Cyrus and New Moon is not so loving. Cyrus has stated that she will never see the New Moon movie and that she does not like vampires at all. Miley has even went as far as saying that she does not like the Twilight craze at all. The whole New Moon issue is one that Miley Cyrus will try to avoid at all cost.

or

or a balance of them both. While my daughter personally likes both she is not a fanatic that jumps on the bandwagon with either the vampire look or the whole Miley Cyrus scenario.

Amanda Knox

Amanda Knox

I am always interested in things going on in the world. One reason for this is because I have a couple of sons who love trivia and world news. One item that I have been watching in the news quite regularly is the Amanda Knox trial. While I do not know the truth of this situation whether guilty or not I have to say that my heart feels for her family. Her mother and father who have spent over $1 million dollars as estimated by the news. I believe that they believe in her and who would not. We all want to believe and stick by our children through whatever goes on in their lives. Amanda Knox was 20 years old when she was arrested in November 2007. For two years she awaited the verdict with her family. Whether guilty or not I do not know but the one thing I do know is that this family felt terrible pain and I would hope that if anything terrible were to happen to the ones I love I would stand by them with all my support.

Chocolate Peppermint Candy Cane Cookies

1/3 cup shortening
1/3 cup butter (no substitutes)
3/4 cup sugar
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 egg
2 tablespoons milk
1 teaspoon vanilla
1/3 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
1 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
4 ounces white chocolate
2 to 4 teaspoons shortening
1/2 to 2/3 cup crushed peppermint candy canes
Beat 1/3 cup shortening and butter on medium speed 30 seconds. Add sugar and baking powder, then egg, milk, and vanilla. Beat in cocoa powder and as much flour as you can with mixer. Stir in remaining flour. Divide dough in half. Cover; chill at least 1 hour. Preheat oven to 375 degree F. Working with one portion of dough at a time, roll to slightly less than 1/4-inch thickness on lightly floured surface. Using a 4-inch candy-cane-shape cutter, cut dough. Place 1 inch apart on ungreased cookie sheet. Bake in preheated oven 7 to 9 minutes or until firm and lightly browned. Remove from cookie sheet; cool on a wire rack. Heat white chocolate and 2 teaspoons shortening in a small saucepan over low heat till melted, stirring often. (Add more shortening, if necessary, for drizzling consistency.) Drizzle one cookie with chocolate mixture; sprinkle with candy. Repeat with remaining cookies. Let stand till set. Makes about 36 cookies.

Hosting a Christmas Cookie Exchange

Do you want to know a way that you can make a dozen cookies, have a bit of fun and go home with more cookies than you came with? We used to do this at work where us girls would each make a dozen or so of cookies and leave with a box full and here is how you can host your own Christmas cookie exchange:

  • First you will have to decide how many people will be invited. The number of people involved will determine how many cookies each person will have to bring. Too few people will yield only a small selection of cookies
  • Once it is decided how many people will be participating then the number of cookies that each guest will have to bring will be decided. I have seen where each member of the group brings a dozen of cookies per participant and I also have seen where you only bring a couple of cookies for each person included
  • Send invitations they can be formal or fun. Geting the point across to your friends can be fun and exciting if you want it to be. Planning the party ahead of time will allow you to give a couple of weeks advance notice. The holiday season can be very busy and the holiday season can get very busy.
  • Perhaps you would like to find out what sort of cookie each person will be bringing it can be very fun if each person brings only one cookie recipe to share and each person brings a different variety. To make it interesting another idea is to not allow the typical chocolate chip, peanut butter etc... so that each person will use their imagination to make the cookies creative.
  • Request each person RSVP at this time you can have them share the variety they will be bringing. Also tell each person to bring a container to place cookies in
  • It would be a great idea for each person to bring an extra dozen to sample. This way each person can taste the delicious goodies while chatting and having a great time
  • It is a great idea for you as the host to provide beverages. Whether they be cocoa, milk or coffee the cookie nibblers will be able to enjoy their sample cookie with a drink.

That is how to host a cookie exchange. If not this year then maybe next year.

Thankful Thursday

Here are my three young men today I talk about the youngest of the three the one in the white.
Here we are after Thanksgiving and my heart is still full of thanks for so many things in my life. I am thankful that my son has a heart of gold that he is the one that keeps me going at times when all seems lost. In his 17 years of life he has learned so much. I look at him and praise God for all he has done with this young mans life. He receives straight A's , is an athlete who loves to play football and loves his Lord with all his heart. Just this week he was treated out to Ponderosa as a rotary student. I must say he is the young boy that at 7 years old could not speak and was not thought to be able to read or write praise God that those that said he would not be able to do things were proved wrong. While I have praise for many different things in my life my son is among the tops. This shared with the Thankful Thursday group being hosted today on the blog Women Taking A Stand

Thursday 13

Today I have decided to share 13 things for Thursday 13 that I love to do with my family during the Christmas season.

  1. Share the true Christmas Story and watch the Christmas play at church

2.Knowing that the time for Santa has arrived

3 The Winter Season brings such a beauty with it

4. The icicles hanging from all and all around we love to see just how long they will get

5 making snow angels has always been one of my favorite winter activities

watching those movies with my family we sort of sit like this all around close enough to lean on each other

As long as I dont have to go out in it I love the snow and ofte sing the let it snow song

a good book rather to read it alone or read it with my children is often enjoyable in the cold winter

Winter brings its own sort of decorations so once again the house gets a fix up with a bit of beauty

sitting by the fireplace is something I used to love to do at my grandparents house

Building a good snow man is an event I have many great memories of this was always fun as a child, with my own children and cant wait to do it with my grand child

Baking cookies is something we always find time to do in the winter time not only for Christmas but throughout the winter season

last but not least is the wonderful fun snowball fights of the old days.

Today for Thursday 13 I think I shared 13 different things that we love to do in the winter

Thursday Thunks

Its been a bit since I last participated in Thursday Thunks but thought I would stop back by and see whats happening.

1. Sometimes when you are sitting around doing nothing, a thought randomly pops into your head. How many measuring cups do you own?

man you should see my cabinet where I keep my measuring cups I would say there is at least a dozen in there

2. What is your favorite ice cream topping?

hot caramel and sugared pecans

3. Egg nog - is it digestible?

my daughter loves it me not so much

4. Were you one of the insane humans who went to a store last Friday?

yes I was but not as early as the rest of them

5. There are 12 months in a year, anywhere from 28 - 31 days in a month, depending on the year, of course. Each day holds a special meaning for someone, some days hold a special meaning for everybody. Do you have a 2010 calendar yet?

yes I do butt this was a long way to go to that question

6. Kids are funny sometimes and say the darndest things, but it's ok because they are kids and they are so adorable. A two year old is cute when they say a swear word. Admit it, they are. What was your favorite nursery rhyme growing up? Hey - if you don't have a favorite, just work with me here and pick the first one that fell off the wall and broke like an egg or came out of the sky like a cow who just jumped over the moon.

Little Boy Blue was repeated to us I believe it is my moms favorite

7. Most of us have some type of machine that people like to call 'vehicles'. Some are blue, some are yellow, some are red. Some have trunks, some have beds and some even can't decide if they are a car or a truck. We put gas in them, check the oil and drive them all over the place and stop them in places called parking spots. Picture in your mind the machine you currently own and if you own more than one, picture the one you last drove - when was the last time you had a new tire on it?

had a flat tire fixed within the last week

8. For those of us on Facebook, do you wish to share your Facebook identity with us?

if you know me email me and I may share it with you otherwise no thanks

9. Santa's coming! Where's the best place to hide presents? Any clever little tricks for keeping those nosey people from ruining the surprise?

we have a storage shed but nothing clever just a lock and a key

10. Have you heard that the world is going to end in 2012? Some people think that the world isn't actually going to go BOOM! and be no more, they think that the "end of the world" is actually going to be a worldwide takeover by a certain country and/or religion, which all has to do with the current president of the USA. Do you agree?

I think the world will end at a pre determined time which only God holds the number

11. Butterly, butterfly fluttering through the air, please don't land on my freshly washed hair. What brand of shampoo did you use this morning? (and for those of you who still stink.. think of yesterday morning... and if that still doesn't apply to you - go get your stinky butt in the shower!)

Flirty Aprons

Whether you are looking for aprons like your grandma had, one to impress those that you love or one to make you look extra flirty with a flair of beauty the folks over at Flirty Aprons can help you out. We adored the party pink apron we received to review for this post. So fancy and yet so useful allowed us to stay looking great under the heat and pressure of cooking for the family. The apron allows me to look stylish in the kitchen while I do what comes naturally. Flirty Aprons has an apron that will fit your personality as well. Just take a look at the assortment of colors and styles they have available for you to choose from.
Do you have a young helper in the house that would love to help you in the kitchen? Well they can look as good as you can. Either in a matching apron or in one that fits their own style and attitude. Just look how cute this Flirty girls apron looks and think about how great that young girl in the family would love to help you and look great while they do just that. Would make a perfect Christmas gift for the young lady in the family.
And yes men cook in my kitchen as well and Flirty Aprons did not forget them. Flirty Aprons realized that men cooked as well and created fun and creative aprons with sayings of different kinds so that your man will feel comfortable in the kitchen as well.

Flirty Aprons was founded by two married couples the Hansen's and the Taylor's. A friendship that grew into a business partners. Heather Hansen had spent some time working as a model and loved both fashion and design. Heather met and married Joseph Hansen and together they help mold Flirty Aprons where Joseph envisions women wearing flirty aprons to allow self expression and great excitement. Jamie Taylor serves as the company's chair operations officer where she uses her talents to oversee production and designs apron patterns. Jamie's husband Spencer Taylor has spent a bit of time serving God through missions and teaching in Brazil. Spencer uses his talents as an economic major for purchasing and guiding the company through the economic world. Together these couples came together to form a great company known as Flirty Aprons.
