Once upon a time I was in college. For nothing less than hoping to become a school teacher. While the trail leaves incomplete I do have to say I can imagine what being a substitute teacher is like. While student teaching I learned a few things that one should do. By the way whether you are a sub for a teaching position, scout leader., sunday school leader or whatever it may be I must tell you that these tip will help you in the future as well
- Get there early, this will help you not only find the right room but prepare a bit as well. Being prepared is part of the structure and it will help you do better as well.
- If you will be in the position for the day know when the break times are. When do subjects change, recess happen etc...
- In the early morning introduce yourself to the class. Let them know who you are, that while you are there you are in charge and at the same time allow them to see that you are there to help as well.
- To keep full attention offer a promise of a small reward if the day goes well
- Instruct the way you want to, the way that keeps you comfortable. Is it by hands on or story telling ?? Whatever your favorite technique is use it
The following is a sort of cheat sheet that may just help you out.
