Born November 2nd 1795 President James Knox Polk was best known for expansion of the United States through the Mexican territory. Prior to being president he was the Speaker of the House of Representatives as well as the Governor of Tennessee. Polk was a democratic that fought hard for the Andrew Jackson Democracy.
During Polk's presidency the United States grew in size. His term saw the annexation of Republic of Texas, the Oregon Territory, and the Mexican Cession following the Mexican American War victory.
Polk is considered by many most effective president of the pre-civil war era. During his term he met every major domestic an foreign policy goal set. Not only did he lead to victory in Mexican war but also settled with the United Kingdom over Oregon Country.
There are those that look at Polk and point to negative points as well.
- he owned a plantation in Mississippi and not only owned slaves but bought them as president
- many believe he should have avoided war
Polk left office in 1849, returned to Tennessee and passed away just a few months later.
