Stop Domestic Violence

The National Coalition against Domestic Violence stats show that 20 people are physically abused by an intimate partner every minute in the United States. That number quite startled me I had no idea that domestic violence was that large of an issue. For those that find their self on the wrong side of abuse there is a hotline number to call. Every day there are 20,000 calls from around the country to this hotline. Thus an average of 10 million men and women are suffering from domestic abuse each year, not to mention the number of incidents that go unreported.

Are you aware of the signs of domestic violence. Without knowledge and awareness domestic violence has no preventive measures. Here are a few signs that may indicate domestic violence is occuring
  • Given bruises, scars, black eyes, broken bones, etc.
  • Hit, kicked, choked, punched, or slapped
  • Threatened or harmed with a weapon
  • Told what to eat, when to sleep, and where to go or not go
  • Forced to use drugs or alcohol
  • Not allowed to seek medical treatment or call the police
  • Abandoned in an unfamiliar place or bad situation
  • Subjected to reckless or aggressive driving while in the car

Not all domestic violence has to be physical to be considered abuse. This type of abuse is known as emotional abuse:
  • demeaned, belittled, called names and insulting
  • humiliation in public
  • accusations of being unfaithful, cheated on, lied to
  • isolated away from friends and family . followed or stalked by partner, confinement in home
  • told they deserve to be abused as well as being blamed for the abuse
  • partner demands they look or wear certain clothes

If the domestic violence is based around sex then it is considered sexual abuse. There are a variety of signs that include:
  • forced to dress in sexual manner
  • forced to perform sex when not in mood or acts they do not want to do
  • being hurt on purpose during sex
  • made to watch or make porn
  • being physically abused and then forced to have sex
  • forced to have sex with others
If you or someone you know is living with abuse call th national Domestic Violence Hotline 1-800-799-7233

  1. This is a very thorough list but not complete. Please just look for anything that seems out of the ordinary or that looks like the person is not respected. If they are not respected - there is likely abuse of some sort.

  2. This is such important information and topic to know. Many people don't talk about domestic abuse as much as it should be, because it is very real. It's great that you listed so many of the signs, since many people who are in these kinds of situations are afraid to speak up. I'll definitely pass this along, thanks for sharing!
