Colorectal cancer is a cancer that starts in the colon or the rectum. You may have heard of colon cancer or rectal cancer. The title of cancer is determined where they start. Both the colon and rectal area have similar features and thus are grouped together.
Growths known as polyps are often signs that colorecal cancer is present. These growths are located on the inner lining of the colon or rectum. Polyps will at times grow into cancer over time However, not all polyps will become cancer.
If the polyp is cancerous it may be an Adenomatous polyp (pre-cancerous) or Hyperplastic polyp. If the polyp is cancerous then cancer can grow in the wall of the colon or rectum. These walls are made up of many layers, colorectal cancer begins in the innermost layer and grows outward. Cancer can grow into other parts of the body through blood vessels or lymph vessels.
A colorectal cancer screening can help increase the number of survivors. Screenings help I.D. the disease before symptoms occur. Physicians screen for colorectal cancer depending on a persons age, medical history and family history.
