Vintage New Orleans Christmas Cookies

New Orleans Christmas Cookies

1/2 cup butter
 1-1/2 cups brown sugar
 1 egg
 1-1/2 cups all-purpose flour
 1 teaspoon vanilla
 1 cup coarsely chopped pecans and extra whole ones for topping.

 Beat together butter, sugar, egg until creamy, then add remaining ingredients in order given. Chill. Between palms, shape dough into balls 1 inch diameter, place 3 inches apart on buttered sheet, flatten to 1/8 inch thick with tumbler. Decorate tops with whole pecans. Bake at 375°F for about 12 minutes.
