Glaucoma is the term that refers to a group of disorders that damage the ocular nerve. The damage often leads to vision loss and blindness. Glaucoma is most commonly caused by ocular hypertension or high pressure inside of the eye. In most cases there are no early warning signs.
Glaucoma is a frightening condition that often becomes a sudden problem with no warning signs or symptoms. Regular eye exams are often the first noticeable issue when the pressure of your eyes are monitored.
Those most at risk for Glaucoma are:
- middle age and elderly are most affected but all ages can be affected
- African Americans makes the risk go up
- Individuals with diabetes, high blood pressure and heart disease are at higher risk
- family history of glaucoma increases risk
There is no cure for glaucoma. Caught early steps can be taken to slow or halt vision loss. Treatments such as eye drops reduces the pressure build up inside of your eye can make difference Everyone over the age 40 should get eye exams and those with any of the higher risk individuals should be checked more often.
