Sandwich Day

As you can tell if you have visited my blog on one or more occasions I love to share recipes. My mother was like this very much in the meals that she cooked us. Always trying something new and different. Of course there were favorites that we had often but in between she would use cookbooks, magazines and even t.v. shows to find new recipes. I hope that you have been able to find a few great recipes here on our blog Annies Home as well. Today November 3 is Sandwich day. It is more the style of cooking my dad recalled his own mother preparing. He told me before that she always made some sort of sandwich as they were a farm family and sandwiches were easier to prepare.

Sandwiches are both convenient and the most popular and loved food item world wide. Whether you make your own sandwich or stop at one of the many sandwich shops it is a great day to have one. When Sandwich day first occurred is not a known fact. It may have been part of an advertising plot by one sandwich shop or another. Sandwiches their selves, however, have been around some time with the first sandwich recorded in the 18th century.

The 4th Earl of Sandwich created the first sandwich by placing meat between 2 slices of bread. This was done first out of necessity so that the majesty would not have to leave the poker game to attend dinner. He could eat the sandwich in one hand and continue the game with the other.

Since that time the sandwich has became a familiar food item worldwide. Some of the most popular being hamburger, ham and cheese, grilled cheese, tuna salad, PB&J and bologna. If you are looking for what pleases your taste buds most likely you can find it in a sandwich.

The Gerber Sandwich is an open faced sandwich made in St. Louis Missouri. The bread used is Italian or French spread with garlic butter and topped with ham, Provel or provolone cheese then seasoned with paprika. The sandwich is toasted.

Originating in St. Louis Missouri the Gerber Sandwich was one of my dad's favorites.

The Horseshoe originates in another Mid-west area, springfield Illinois.

1 (9 ounce) bag frozen steak cut french fries shopping list
1 pound ground beef
4 slices bread, toasted ( I would suggest using a more hearty bread, or even a good french roll, buttered and toasted under the broiler)
Cheese sauce:
1/2 cup butter
1/4 cup flour
2 cups heavy cream or half and half
1 teaspoon chicken base (sold where bulloin is sold)
2 cups shredded sharp cheddar cheese
salt and ground black pepper to taste (optional
Note: while this sandwich is typically prepared using a hamburger patty, you can also use sliced ham, egg and tomato, sausage, chicken, and even shrimp.! Try them all!!

Preheat the oven to 400 degrees. Spread french fries out on a baking sheet. Bake for 20 minutes in the preheated oven, or until golden brown.
Meanwhile, divide the ground beef into four equal parts and form into patties. Season with a little salt and pepper. Fry the patties in a large skillet over medium-high heat until well done, about 4 minutes per side.
To make the sauce, melt the butter in a saucepan over medium heat and whisk in the flour. Cook while stirring constantly for 4 minutes to cook out the flavor of raw flour. Gradually whisk in the cream or half-and-half, so that no lumps form. Stir in the chicken base. Bring to a simmer then remove from the heat and add the cheese; stir until melted. Season with salt, pepper, and hot sauce to taste.
Place 2 slices of toasted bread onto 2 dinner plates and top each slice with a hamburger patty. Top each patty with cooked french fries. Pour the cheese sauce on top of everything and serve immediately.

While I am from the mid-west and these two sandwiches happen to originate in the area I am nearest I know that there are sandwiches world wide. What is your favorite sandwich?? Have one that originates in or near your area?? Would love to hear about it in comments Til then have a great day and Enjoy!!!
