How Halloween Originated

Have you ever wondered how Halloween came about?? Halloween was originally part of an ancient Celtic festival of Samhain. 2,000 years ago in what is now Ireland, the United Kingdom and northern France celebrated their new year on November 1st.

At the end of summer, the Celts thought the barrier between our world and the world of ghosts and spirits was really thin. It was believed that weird creatures with strange powers could wander about on Earth freely. The Celts would host a party to scare away the ghost and spirits. The Christian religion would be the reason for this day to be known as All Hallows' Eve. The day after is All Saints Day on November  1st.

America takes halloween to another step. Irish immigrants to the United States helped raise the popularity of Halloween during the 19th century. In the 20th century Halloween became even more popular. The traditions of pumpkin carving, trick or treating as well as Halloween being demonstrated on books, movies and T.V. shows.

Millions of people in multiple countries celebrate Halloween as fun time for kids. It is a time for putting on costumes and going door to door trick or treating. It is also a time of witches, ghouls, goblins and ghosts. Some Christians see Halloween as a harmless time of fun and others recognize Halloween as ghastly and demonically inspired night that should be avoided.
