Celebrate the hamburger

Most of us would recognize the above picture as a hamburger or simply as a burger. Most are served sandwich style with one or more cooked patties of meat inside of a sliced bread roll or bun. The ground meat patty which is normally beef can be pan fried, grilled, smoked or flame broiled. You can top the hamburger sandwich with anything you choose. Some of the most popular toppings include cheese, lettuce, tomato, onion, bacon, pickles, or chilies. When the hamburger is topped with cheese it is often renamed a cheeseburger.

Early Hamburgers in the united States

A lunch wagon in New Haven, Connecticut owned by Louis Lassen is said to have sold the first hamburger and steak sandwich in the United States in 1900. As sort of a substitute for a steak Lassen used ground beef trimmings to form into a patty and grilled it up. The meat was served as a sandwich on two slices of toast.

At the Seymour Wisconsin fair an individual by the name of "hamburger" Charlie Nagreen was selling a meatball between 2 slices of bread in 1885.

How do you like your hamburger served??
