Banned book week started in 1982 to create awareness of the harm of censorship. During the week a challenge to read and express ideas is given.
In the past several of our favorite childhood books were banned. Here are just a few examples:
- The Giving Tree by Shel Silverstein
- The Lorax by Dr. Seusswas banned in 1989 by a California school because it was portrayed logging industry in a bad light. The Lorax was criticized for excessive portrayal of consumerism where greedy Americans want the latest and greatest items regardless of consequences
- James and the Giant Peach by Roald Dahl
