DST

Early this morning (March 11, 2018) local standard time was reached. At that time all clocks were turned forward 1 hour. The event happened at 2:00 am which made it 3:00 am in local daylight time. While we did not see a lot of sun as snow covered our local area the sunrise and sunset should 1 hour later than the day before. In equivalence this means there will be more light in the evenings ahead.

The purpose of Daylight Saving Time is to make better use of daylight. Many areas of the world welcome in "Summer Time" at this time. Countries have different change dates according to how close you live to the equator. Near the equator days and nights are nearly the same length of time about 12 hours. The close you live to the North or South Pole the longer period of daylight in the summer.

Benjamin Franklin was the first with the idea of daylight saving time. During his time as an American delegate in Paris in 1784 he authored a essay titled "An Economical Project" where he expressed his ideas.

William Willett expressed his opinion in a pamphlet "Waste of Daylight" in 1907. Willett a London builder proposed advancing clocks 20 minutes on each of 4 Sundays in April and then slowing them down 20 minutes on the 4 Sundays in September.
"Everyone appreciates the long, light evenings. Everyone laments their shortage as Autumn approaches; and everyone has given utterance to regret that the clear, bright light of an early morning during Spring and Summer months is so seldom seen or used."
Englands House of Commons introduced a bill that made it compulsory to adjust the clocks. The bill was met with ridicule and opposition but farmers found great interest in it. Germany would be the first to take the lead and pass an act of standard time. May 17, 1916 England would follow Willett's scheme  There are still countries that do not utilize Daylight Savings Time India, China and Japan are on the list of those that do not observe. The States of Arizona and Hawaii do not observe DST

Daylight Savings Time will end November 4th 2018.
While you are up changing the time on the clocks; it is still a good idea to also change your batteries in all your safety equipment such as smoke detectors, carbon monoxide detectors, weather radios, flash lights, etc.

  3. I hate Daylight Savings Time. I wish it would stick with one or the other, and honestly, I prefer it being lighter in the morning because it makes it easier to wake up.

  7. Spring Forward for Daylight Savings is always so hard on me! I dislike when it's dark when I get ready for work in the morning, but it's nice to have the extra sunlight in the afternoon

  8. So funny thing, here in FL I guess they are trying to vote to get rid of Daylight savings and stay on the time we are on now. Which would make us are own time zone so weird lol. However, I dont think we really need it anymore since we aren't mostly farmers like the old days.

  10. Losing that hour really does me in and I am not sure why. It's just an hour, right?! It sure does make all the difference though.
