How Long Do Spices Last

Do you bake in the fall?? IF you answered yes have you also checked your spices to make sure they are up to date and fresh?? It is important during baking time that you have the proper ingredients and that they are fresh that includes the spices. It will only take a few minutes to ensure your spices are not expired.

Here is a quick glance at spices that are most often used and an idea of how long they should last

  • Ground spices (nutmeg, cinnamon, turmeric): 2 to 3 years
  • Herbs (basil, oregano, parsley): 1 to 3 years
  • Seasoning blends: 1 to 2 years
  • Whole spices (cloves, peppercorns, cinnamon sticks): 4 years
  • Seeds: 4 years (except for poppy and sesame seeds, which should be discarded after 2 years)
  • Extracts: 4 years (except for vanilla, which will last forever)
