Enjoy a Fluffernutter

Do you know what I mean when I say fluffernutter?? First of all if you are on a diet you may not want to know. As fluffernutter has plenty of calories between two slices of bread. First it is a layer of peanut butter and marshmallow fluff and if you like a few banana slices. Fluffernutter originates from New England region of the United States. Fluffernutter is also a term to describe dessert dishes that use both peanut butter and marshmallow cream.

Fluffernutter roots date back in time a century or so. In fact marshmallows date back even more than that to ancient Egypt. At that time the mallows were honey based and thickened with sap from the marshmallow plant. The treat was reserved for the rich, pharaohs and gods.

The marshmallow plant was used by pharmacists in Paris France during the 19th century. Juice from the plant was cooked with egg whites and sugar that was whipped and cooled to turn into a soft pillow like product. The concoction was used to treat children's sore throats. However, the product caught on and many started enjoying the medicinal candy like real candy.

Those in the confection world would take over from there removing the marshmallow juice and adding a gelatin. Marshmallows then became a popular dessert ingredient The marshmallow sauce grew in popularity and soon was being used in more than desserts.

White sauces from marshmallows were dressing up all kinds of foods. By 1910 marshmallow fluff was introduced to the world. The fluff was sold at soda fountains and ice cream parlors and was to top ice cream sundaes. The line of products to come out with a marshmallow concoction was only starting as there were many more to come

A brother and sister team , Emma and Andy Curtis would be the first to introduce marshmallow cream for home use. Emma would sell it door to door and offered sample as she demonstrated her product. It was the marshmallow cream and Emmas recipes that would first dream up using marshmallow cream in sandwiches.

National Fluffernutter Day was created Somerville Ma would honor Marshmallow fluff in 2006 on October 8th.
