gratituesday reflection on 2008

Looking back on 2008 I would like to list the great things that happened and thank God for carrying us through the times when it wasnt that great. I became a grandmother in September but also lost our business in October. I saw my son play football and love it going to the playoffs but also saw them loose and the seniors to look defeated. I believe that for every valley God will provide a mountian and it is for this reason that I dream of 2009 where God will carry us through the goods and the bads and be there when we are full of joy or feel lonely. It is 2009 where things will come to an end where my daughter will graduate highschool, my son will graduate from jr college and move on to university, where my middle son will play his last year of highschool sports and where new begginings will happen as well such as my nephew begins kindergarten, my daughter will find herself going back to school or work, where my middle daughter will begin college and where my grandbaby will turn a year old. Thank God that no matter where or what we do he will be there for us all.

The blog Speaking from the Heart has started a new meme. One that I believe I will love. This is what she wrote about the new meme that she is starting up

Over Thanksgiving and Christmas, I have heard so many wonderful
stories about my ancestors. There were also stories about my childhood, which I
totally had forgotten. I have made a mental note of each story and have every
intentions of documenting it. In order to help me in this area, I have decided
to blog a weekly story about my ancestors, and about my childhood. I want to have
these stories written down, before my memory escapes from me, and to leave a
legacy for my children and for future generations.

I wanted to share with you about my Grandmothers christmas tree. This tree was always special to me. You see my grandmother lived in the country and would go out and cut down her own christmas tree. Because she did it herself this tree was always a bit small. It stood about 3 feet tall at the most and boy did she decorate it with lights and ornaments. After my grandfathers death things changed and these little trees changed into an artificial tree that was still quite cute and neat but not the same. My grandmother seemed to change little things in her life never making a broad change but ones that always fit together somehow. I loved her because she was so frugal but never let on. My parents have often said that I am alot like her and I consider that a compliment knowing what type of lady she was. I loved her and I am sure you will being hearing lots more about her.

Reflection Saturday

This week went so fast and the weather was a variety of flavors. Monday we stayed home as ice was all over the place and no one wanted to get out but there was shopping still to be done. The water froze and there was little to be done so we hung out and had alot of fun family time. The kids are all getting older and at times that is exactly what we need
Tuesday we went and visited his sister for the first time in quite a while. She just lives on the other side of town but things just sort of get in the way of getting together. But it was still cold and icy so we did not stay out long
Wednsday the long awaited cookie dough that my son sold was in and now needs to be delivered.. Still no water in the house so we needed to go get showers and water at his sisters house. We felt revived after those showeres. It was a little bit warmer and we decided we needed to finish up buying christmas presents. We decided that we would cut the list down a bit. The kids all had their shopping left to do as well. It went lat in the day and we arriaved home 15 minutes before church so i went to church with my sister and daughter and enjoyed the christmas eve service. When I arrived home my husband had the supper on the table. What a good husband I have. We ate and talked and wrapped gifts and went to bed.
Thursday, CHristmas day, what a fun day we had we went to his step dads and sisters opened gifts at our house, read the christmas story made monkey bread and biscuts and gravy for breakfast and all had a great time. That night was quiet as some of our kids stayed at other houses since they had family in. Our children just keep growing up.
Friday we fixed the water lines they were all shattered so it took 1/2 day but the temps were nice and warm almost as if God planned it that way. We ate leftovers and rested some. We started cleaning since with no water little cleaning gets done and today we are finishing that right after I quit blogging thanks for reading and getting a glimpse into our life.

What is one thing you will commit to do in 2009 that will draw you closer to Jesus? (This is not a New Year’s Resolution)
I will choose to shout it from the mountian tops to share with all I know about everything I know about him. I sometimes stay quiet afraid of what someone will say. I will stand up and not be afraid any more

Katelynn

This is a picture of my little granddaughter (3 months old) however this is not just my granddaughter but a miracle baby. This is a grandchild that has a guardian angel watching over here and I feel one that God has a great mission in life for. To start with this little girl was not to happen if the doctors had their way. This little girls parents were told that they could not have a baby. My daughter this little angels mother prayed and cried and all that she knew is that she wanted a baby. Her husband and her made the decision to save money for adoption of a baby that they would love as their own. This decision was taken to the alter many times and you can not even understand the suprise and praise that went up when they found out that God had blessed them with a pregnancy. At birth everything seemed to go wrong until we saw this little angel 20 inches long and nearly 10 lbs she was healthy and looked huge compared to the other babies in the nursery. At 2 months old though this baby was diagnosed carrying the virus that caused meningitis yet again prayers went up and we set in for the long haul they predicted a month with the outcome of either brain dead, blindness, deafness, or mental problems were possible. We waited and prayed and when they took the spinal tap once again the test turned up no signs of illness. Well all said that the first test was wrong we said no this was GOd and God is love and he protected her. The prayers that were said were like music to GOds ears. Praise God!! Well that is why this picture out of all that I have would be the one I would want because you see she played baby Jesus in the christmas play at church and is not afraid of Santa instead chooses to chew on his finger. Thank God for all that he has done and will do for Katelynn

Aloha Friday

An Island Life holds Aloha Friday and I decided to join in this time.
" In Hawaii, Aloha Friday is the day that we take it easy and look forward to the weekend. "
So we are to ask a question that is simple enough to answer.
Here is my question
My question is now that it is the day after Christmas did you rest or go shopping?

Check out this song it will give you a real flashback before my time in fact but I love Tennessee Ernie Ford because of my Dad. We had a game where he would whistle a song and me and my sisters would have to guess what it was. Here is the link and thanks for helping me put song on my site. Hopefully you will get a kick out of the children as I did.

Favorite Song

I was asked about my favorite song tonight and I started thinking about my dad. My dad used to play a game with me and my sister where he would whistle a tune and we would try to guess it. Well he whistled alot of Tennessee Ernie Ford and now we know those songs even if others do not. Anyways this video of Children Go where I Send Thee is one to watch and listen too.

After Christmas Shopping

Did you go shopping today, the 26th of December. I had a friend from England who loved this day and called it boxing day. I believe she told me that this was the day that all the servents etc.. had the day off and celebrated christmas I believe I will look this up. Anyways the news shoes those who went shopping made great deals. We spent the day fixing busted water pipes but all I can say is YES!!!! After 3 days of no running water it feels good to have it again. My girls are spending the day at their aunt and uncle and just came home to pick up gift cards and yes I believe they may do a bit of shopping tonight. You know its good when your kids learn how to save.

Good and Cheap supper tonight

Tonight for supper I used a bit of the left over ham from Christmas Eve and 2 boxes of scalloped potatoes that I spent a whole .98 cents for both of them. Made all these into a great casserole and spent a whole. 98 on the whole casserole. YEAH!!!!!!!!!!!!! I saw this somewhere on a blog and have learned to use thrifty and frugal steps. I also prepared a salad that did not get made on christmas eve so those ingredients were left over. Man I love you guys that blog keep it up I love to learn and suprise my husband.

Simple womans day book

FOR TODAY December 22
Outside my window... I can see a quite sort of day very cold here and little is moving
I am thinking... of the peacefulness that the cold brings less hustle and bustle but also that I must go out and get something for kids to drink if water stays frozen
I am thankful for... everything in life all has its purpose and we must find the goodness in all
From the kitchen... little is going on today but the kitchen is warm and we will make meals today but no planned baking yet we may if the mood strikes
I am wearing... sweat suit the only thing that will keep us warm since it is 7 degrees and feels like -10 degrees
I am creating... a plan for the week if it stays cold like it is
I am going... nowhere unless it is to the store on quick errand to get water
I am reading... the devotional book my kids and I are woking on
I am hoping... that all have a merry christmas and the water unfreezes
I am hearing... sounds of my children playing
Around the house... little straigtning to do, no water so no laundry
One of my favorite things... my family all of them
A few plans for the rest of the week: Christmas Eve services and supper at my house and christmas dinners at in laws

Its cold good time for hamburger pie

It is very cold this morning in Southern Illinois. Thank goodness it was not so cold the other night when the kids went christmas caroling with the youth group. That night they came in super hungry and I had prepared them hamburger pie. They devoured it.

Hamburger Pie Casserole
1 lb hamburger or sausage
1 can corn
2 c cheese
2 c instant potatoes

Brown hamburger Drain and then layer in order given Bake 400 degrees for 20 minutes It is so good

Husband was ready to eat before it went back into oven to bake but I still heated it probably for 1/2 time and everyone at it quicker than I do not know what.

Monday Musings

Bless us Lord, this Christmas, with quietness of mind; Teach us to be patient and always to be kind. - Helen Steiner Rice

I love this after yesterdays church sermon on the differences between Mary and Martha and the importance of being quite. Sometimes we get to busy and forget what it is all about. I think this cold weather has forced us to look at what this season is about. We can not shop, all out of ingredients to cook but we still have each other and the bible stories to tell. We should all be quite and reflect in the season just take a short break and pause upon the season

thankfulness

I am thankful for several things today.

I am thankful for my grandma who taught me lots of things even if I didn't know at the time I was learning. It seemed that she was strict on me but now that I look back on it she was teaching me things that I would use in the future and I do. I can remember my dad telling me that I was alot like my grandmother because of how I took care of my house, my children and gave all the praise to God. My mother has often commented on things that I do that my grandmother used to do that. SO today I would like to list the things I am grateful my grandmother taught me

cooking, she always loved to cook and so do I
saving, I never knew that she was so thrifty my mother pointed this out that both me and her knew how to save money
cleaning, she was always tidy and i have had people to comment that they could not believe how nice my house was kept with all the children that I have
serving, she was always serving others and I desire to do for others as well whether family, church, community or other
praising God, I will never forget how she sang in church I loved it even if it was not always on key she praised God regardless

those are a few of the things that I am thankful that my grandmother taught me

teacher gifts

Tackle It Tuesday Meme

My children who are all very close to their teachers decided that they would like to give a special gift to each of them. Well, we are a bit low on money this year and I was not sure what to do so this is what we did.
I prepared peppermint bark and snickerdoodles, wrapped them both in wrap and placed them in a coffee cup with a nativity scene ornament. I cant wait to see what the teachers think. As far as gifts for ladies in my sunday school I am making each of them a stocking out of felt sewed together and placing a candy cane in each one.
I wish I had a camera so I could show you all.

Zero would have to be my alltime favorite candy bar

Carmel and chocolate chews I have loved since I was knee high

Gumdrops I have ate from a very young age as well. I can remember my mother having a gumdrop tree that would come out at christmas time.
How sweet are Your words to my taste, sweeter than honey to my mouth! [Ps. 19:10; Prov. 8:11.]
Is Gods love not wonderful? It is to me you see although candy may fill our earthly sweet tooth God and his words in the bible fill our longing for eternity.

gratituesday

I find myself more and more grateful for the Heavenly Lord who watches out for each of us. I am thankful for my daughter and her family and a great visit that we just had together. Although we only see each other about 1 time a month that little baby Katelynn Casidy still knows that I am her mama and I am so proud of her for everything that she is. I am thankful for my son in law who works his tail off so that my daughter can stay home with her daughter.
I am thankful that My son started his first job and a good job on Saturday. He is looking forward to his first paycheck but I am happy that he feels the need to help his family out financially.
I am thankful that my middle son although not terribly athletic takes it upon himself to participate in sports and urges those on when ever his coplayers have an off day.
Most of all I guess you can say I am thankful for what God made me, a mom.

You see she is a miracle (1) because my daughter and son in law had been told they could never have a baby please be careful when you say never when God is around because God never has a never in his vocabulary. (2) about a month ago she had the virus that causes meningitis they said she would be dead or loose mentality. First the virus was there and then it was no where to be found guess God does work in ways if prayer abounds. Praise God for this little girl for I know that He has plans for her. felt ornaments

Tonight we will be making felt ornaments. They are very simple to make and I will post pictures after they are done.
To make ornament you simply trace christmas cookie cutter onto a piece of felt. We will then decorate the felt ornament with beads, ribbon and such that we have had left over from other projects.
We will also decorate the christmas tree. Although it is up and with lights we had not decorated it yet so tonight will be the night. I am also going to prepare a big pot of chilli.

Chilli (we cheat just a bit but family recipe)
4 cans meaty chilli
3 lbs brown hamburger
1 large can stewed tomatoes
2 can chilli beans
onion, chopped
can tomato juice
spices to taste

This is how I make my chilli. His grandmother always used a chilli block and chilliman chilli but my mom always made homemade chilli using homecanned tomato juice and she would cook it all day. You can say that I went in the middle and made my own.

Well that is what I have going on today that I know about will post pictures later.

Cookie exchange Mexican Wedding cakes

As a 16 year old mom. I needed christmas recipes that were not only cheap to make but easy. This is one of my favorite cookies to make since that time. My mothr in law ofcourse thought they were a bit dry but I loved them and so do the kids.

Mexican Wedding Cakes

1/2 cup powdered sugar
1 cup butter, softened
2 teaspoons vanilla
2 cups all-pupose flour
1 cup finely chopped pecans
1/4 teaspoon saltpowdered sugar

Pre-heat oven to 325 F. In a large bowl combine 1/2 cup powdered sugar, butter and vanilla. Blend well. Stir in flour, nuts and salt until dough holds together. Shape into 1-inch balls. Place inch apart on ungreased cookie sheets. Bake for 15-20 minutes until set but not brown. Immediately remove from cookie sheets. Cool slightly and roll in powdered sugar. Cool completely and reroll in powdered sugar.

melt last 3 together and mix n meat. You may add salsa if you wish but because my entire family does not like spices we meet somewhere in the middle. Anyways, dip tortilla chips in it and it taste great

free digital flip camera

They are giving a free digital flip camera away over at http://www.commonsensewithmoney.com/ you should check it out and try to win they are telling about their favorite holiday. I can remember one I was about 6 years old and just recieved all these wonderful toys from santa. but that was not just the best part the best part was playing with my new toys with my dad. I can remember this as if it was yesterday. He is gone now and I miss him terribly. I wish he was here with us at this time of year he just loved christmas and always made it special. Another one I can remember is when I was a teen mom and my dad took it upon himself to make my babys christmas special you would not believe how much he bought her. I could not believe it. He made it special by not only doting her with tons of gifts but also going to my tiny trailer where we lived and placed a basket of vegetable and fruit there knowing we had little to nothing. I love him for that and will never forget it.

Christmas shoe

It was almost Christmas timeThere I stood in another lineTrying to buy that last gift or twoNot really in the Christmas mood.Standing right in front of meWas a little boy waiting anxiouslyPacing around like little boys doAnd in his hands he had a pair of shoes. And his clothes were worn and oldHe was dirty from head to toeAnd when it came his time to payI couldn't believe what I heard him say.Sir, I want to buy these shoes, for my Momma pleaseIt's Christmas Eve and these shoes are just her styleCould you hurry Sir? Daddy says there's not much timeYou see, she's been sick for quite a while.I know these shoes will make her smileAnd I want her to look beautifulIf Momma meets Jesus tonight. They counted pennies for what seemed like yearsAnd the cashier said, Son there's not enough hereHe searched his pockets franticlyThen he turned and he looked at me.He said, Momma made Christmas good at our houseThough most years she just did withoutTell me Sir, what am I gonna do?Some how I gotta buy her these Christmas shoes. So I laid the money down, I just had to help him outAnd I'll never forget the look on his faceWhen he said, "Momma's gonna look so great."Sir, I want to buy these shoes for my Momma pleaseIt's Christmas Eve and these shoes are just her styleCould you hurry Sir? Daddy says there's not much timeYou see, she's been sick for quite a while. And I know these shoes will make her smileI want her to look beautifulIf Momma meets Jesus tonight.I knew I caught a breathe of heaven's loveAs he thanked me and ran outI knew that God had sent that little boy to remind meWhat Christmas is all about.Sir, I want to buy these shoes for my Momma pleaseIt's Christmas Eve and these shoes are just her styleCould you hurry Sir? Daddy says there's not much timeYou see, she's been sick for quite a while. And I know these shoes will make her smileAnd I want her to look beautifulIf Momma meets Jesus tonight.I want her to look beautifulIf Momma meets Jesus tonight.

baby items what are they

I purchased a bumbo seat for my 3 month old granddaughter last night. Her mother believes that she needs one but I remember how I helped her mother learn to sit up. It was via the use of pillows that sorrounded her. Man the way things change if anyone has any info that can help me would love to hear it.

candy cane almond bark

When I first made this recipe it was out of neccesity we were not doing well and the children still expected to make christmas candy. In order not to dissapoint them I had some almond bark that i had bought some where probably on sale and I had some extra candy canes that we did not put on the treet and made candy cane almond bark. Now it is loved by everyone and sold for high prices it is very easy you just have to break up your candy cane in tiny bits and mix into your melted almond bark. Spread out on greased or wax paper lined coookie sheet Allow to dry and break into pieces. This is so fab. I am going to add it to the Tempt my tummy blog over at http://blessedwithgrace.blogspot.com/2008/12/tempt-my-tummy-tuesdaymaking-list-and.html so you go visit as well and see what good things are there
