Q & A about beavers



What is a beaver??

The beaver is a large, primarily nocturnal, semiaquatic rodent. The North American beaver is native to North America but the Eurasian beaver is native to Europe and Asia.



Do beavers build dams??

Beavers are known to build dams, canals and lodges or homes.

Is the Beaver a rodent??

Yes, it is the second largest rodent in the world.



How do Beavers protect their selves??

Beaver colonies will build one or more dams to provide still, deep water to protect agains predators as well as to float food and building material to where it needs to be.



Is there a large population of North American Beavers??

North American beavers once totaled to 60 million but now there is only 1/4 of that amount. The reason is due to extensive hunting for beaver fur. The beaver glands are also used as medicine and perfume and is much desired. Beavers harvest of trees and flooding of waterway may interfere with other lands beavers are hunted as rodents as well.
