Mule Day

Mule day is an annual celebration all things related to mules. It is hosted by the self proclaimed "Mule Capital" of the world Columbia Tennessee. The event began in 1840 and was then known as "Breeder's day" . Mule breeders would come together to discuss none other than mules. The event attracts over 200,000 and is held over 4 days. There are mules, great Appalachian food, music, dancing and crafts that are exhibited.

In 1933 the first mule day was hosted to help make some money for the community. The Chamber of Commerce as well as Daily Herald helped bring the event to reality.

What is a mule??
a mule is a cross between a male donkey and a female horse. A mule possesses strength, intelligence, patience, perseverance, endurance and even temper or the donkey. The horse lent the mule beauty, athletic ability, courage, vigor and speed. Mules eat less food than most horses of the same size.

President George Washington was thought to play a major role in the development of the mule population in America. The value of the mule in agriculture was what Washington found interesting.
Donkeys of the time were in America but they were quite small in size.

So if you find yourself near a mule day event take the time and check it out.
