Happy Birthday Thomas Jefferson



Today is the day that a great man straight from the history book pages of time celebrates a birthday. Thomas Jefferson had many great feats during his time. He authored the Declaration of Independence, authored the Statue of Virginia for Religious Freedom, was the third president of the United States, and founder of the University of Virginia. For over 50 years Thomas Jefferson served his country and led the life of a public official, historian, philosopher, and plantation owner.


Thomas Jefferson was born in 1743, fourteen years later his father died. Thomas Jefferson attended the college of William and Mary to study law. By the time Jefferson was 24 he was allowed to practice law before the general court.

Thomas Jefferson would write a Summary view of the Rights of British America. This would be one of the first important papers in history Jefferson would write. Shortly after he would retire from legal practice at the age of 34. Thomas Jefferson would have 11,000 acres of land and 135 slaves when his father in law passed.

Jefferson found true loss in his life when his infant daughter would die in the same year he was elected to Continental Congress. Just one year later Jefferson would draft the Declaration of Independence. As a member of the House of Delegates Jefferson was appointed to revise Virginia laws During this same time period Jefferson's mother would pass away. One year later he would lose an infant son at birth.

In the years 1779 to 1781 Jefferson would serve as Governor of Virginia. During this time more sadness would meet Jefferson when he would lose another daughter. In 1782 a second daughter would be born and Jeffersons wife would die.

Jefferson would be elected as a delegate to congress, the first United States Secretary of State, vice president of the United States, and in 1801 he would serve two terms as President to the United States. During Jeffersons time in office Lewis and Clark would lead an expedition and the Louisiana Purchase would take place

Jefferson would pass away on a fitting day July 4th 1826. He was a hard working American who had his own trials, moments of both sadness and gladness and served his country well.
