Eye Prevention Month
July recognizes Eye Injury Prevention. One area of focus is protecting your eyes in various environments. More than 2,000 eye injuries will occur during any given day. Of the 2,000 eye injuries about 1,000 eye injuries occur in American workplace of these 70% are injuries because of falling or flying objects or sparks striking the eye.
Bright sunlight may increase risk of developing cataracts, age related macular degeneration and growths on the eye or cancer. This is why it is important to wear sunglasses that are 97-100% UV protection. Early detection and treeatment of eye conditions and diseases are essential to maintain good vision at every stage of life.
Children entering school should get their eyes checked by a opthalmologist. If eye problems such as visual changes, pain, flashes of light, seeing spots, excessive tearing or drying occurs one should see an eye professional. Adults betwen the age of 40 to 65 should have eye exam every 2 to 4 years. Adults over age of 65 should have eye exam at least every one to two years. Taking a more proactive approach to healthy vision is the most important tool.
