One of my favorite Christmas Songs speaks of Chestnuts roasting on an open fire..... Jack Frost nipping at your nose.... This song takes me back to the Christmas's of years ago. My grand-parents farm and staying warm while we roasted those chestnuts. So with this said I wanted to share with all of you as well how to roast Chestnuts. I hope you all enjoy
First thing first pre heat oven to 400 degrees or fire up the grill, get the fire established. The thing is however you plan to roast the chestnuts heat it up first.
Prepare the nuts by cutting an x into the flat side of nut with a sharp pointy knife. Be sure to cut through the shell. Scoring the nut allows steam to escape. If this is not done the chestnut can explode. You can also do this step simply by stabbing the nut with a fork, just be sure that the shell is cut through.
Depending on your roasting method spread the nuts n a baking sheet for oven or you can roast them directly on the grill with the cut side up. Be sure to sprinkle the nuts with water. If you are roasting the nuts over an open flame place the nuts in a pan with a long handle and cover.
Roast chestnuts 15 to 20 minutes or 'til they are tender and shell comes off easily. It is a good idea to move them around so they don't burn
After roasting wrap the hot chestnut in a towel and squeeze them just enough but be careful not to crush skins. Leave wrapped in towels for 5 minutes.
Now it's time to peel the nuts while they are warm but in the case that they cool down simply reheat just a bit
Finally it's time to enjoy
I didn't know that roasting chestnuts is this easy. I want to try this.
