Do you have a library card

September is library card sign up month. A library card is an important tool needed by students every where. In 1987 the then Secretary of Education William J. Bennett set the observance so that every child would want a library card. Every fall since then public and school libraries alike have put in effort to ensure every child wants a library card. Library cards a normally free and granted without delay. You often do need to fill out  a form and show some I.D. with proof of residency.

With education being so costly now days a library card is one needed tool that can be free. Studies have showed that children who are read to in the home and who use the library perform better in school and are more likely to continue to use the library as a source of life time learning Librarians are experts on literacy. There are often a variety of programs available that will meet the interest of most any one interest. It begins early with preschool story hours that allows young children to fall in love with books and reading. More than just books are available at a library. Tools like magazines, CDs and DVDs, computers, games, software and many other literary materials are available.

Libraries are a great way to get on the internet for free as well. Many times there are free classes that offer one on one instruction, and other internet classes. Classes that help people learn to start businesses, create resumes, search for jobs and apply for online jobs. They can also help teach patrons how to get in touch with the government. Yes the library and librarians can help with all of this and so much more.

September is a great time to get your library card. After all it is the month for signing up for library card.
