Silent Night is a popular Christmas carol that was composed in 1818. Franz Xaver Gruber a German composer earns credit for this song and the lyrics were created by Joseph Mohr. Mohr and Gruber lived in Salzburg Austria.
Since the song was composed and words accompanied many have recorded it. Every music genre it seems has enjoyed creating their own version of this remarkable song. Perhaps one of the most noted versions was performed by Bing Crosby
Christmas Eve 1818 at St. Nicholas parish church in Oberndorf Austria Franz Gruber was employed as a schoolmaster and organist in the village of Arsdorf. Mohr shared the words to Grubers composition and the two of them worked it out in time fo the Christmas eve service.
The song "Silent Night" would become a popular song in folk music. It would first be performed in the United States at the New York City in 1839. The song would make its rounds around the world including Austria, Russia, and the United States. While the early version was changed slightly most of it remains in tack.
