Before there was text messages or instant messages there was Morse code. Morse code is a method of transmitting text information as a series of on and off tones, lights, or clicks that can be understood by those skilled observers without special equipment. Each Morse code symbol represents either a text character (letter or numberal) and representd by unique sequence of dots and dashes. A dash has a duration three times that of a dot.
