Flower of the Month Primrose

The month of February has two flowers that they claim as flowers of the month. One of these is the primrose which is a perennial that grows between 4 and 12 inches tall. The flower host leaves that are like evergreen with eaves between 2 to 10 inches long and 1 to 2 inches wide. The primrose blooms early in the spring in the Northern Hemisphere appearing between months of February and April. The colors are normally pale with colors of yellow thru white and pink

The primrose flower is associated with various symbolic meanings. The meanings include youth, innocence, new beginnings, love, and birth Primroses are perennial plants that produce colorful blooms in white, yellow, red and browns. Primrose is thought to be the sacred flowers of the Norse goddess of love.

The primrose is one of the first flowers to bloom in the spring. In history the primrose could be seen in gardens during medieval times. Shakespeare even mentioned the primrose in his plays. The primrose began in regions of Europe, Asia and North America.

Shakespeare was not the only writer that included the primrose. There are many instances of folklore tales and in traditional beliefs that also feature the primrose. Primroses were often referred to as fairy flowers where children could see fairies if primroses were digested. In addition, it was considered bad luck if primroses were taken inside.

Primroses are now beloved by many and are thought to make the garden bed look more dressed up. They are used in rock gardens, border plantings, and to cover the ground in wooded areas. Primroses possess a hardiness that offers a splash of color early on.
