Alport Syndrome Awareness

March is the month that the Alport syndrome community reaches out to help bring awareness to this kidney disease that many have never heard of . Alport is a rare disease and that means that the attention that is spent on diseases that affect millions of individuals will never be offered. However, there are 30,000 to 60,000 individuals that do suffer from Alport syndrome in the United States

Alport syndrome is named after a British doctor A. Cecil Alport. It was Dr. Alport that helped to first bring awareness to what at that time was an unknown disease that was demonstrated thru progressive hereditary nephritis and deafness. He noted that there was blood in the urine and that was the most common symtom. In addition he also took note that more males were affected by this disease then women were

In 1961 the disease that Dr. Alport  had researched was given the name of the Alport Syndrome. An inherited disease of the kidney that can also affect the inner ear and eye. The disease affects th IV collagen family of proteins. These type IV collagen is major part of important  tissue structures that are present in the kidney, inner ear and eyes
