Pet Cancer Awareness



November is the month that helps bring awareness to pet cancer. There are several million new pet cancer diagnoses every year. Surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation therapy are used to curb cancer in both humans and pets.



Common Signs and Symptoms of Pet Cancer include:


  • A pets lymph nodes are found through out the body with the easier ones to find being behind the knee and jaw. When lymph nodes are enlarged they may suggest one common form of cancer known as lymphoma. The vet can take a biopsy of large lymph nodes to gain a diagnosis
  • Lump that is rapidly growing or changing in texture or shape should be biopsied. 
  • If the pets stomach is enarged at a fast pace it may suggest a mass or tumor in the abdomen or bleeding that is occuring in the area. Vets will perform a radiograph or ultrasound of the abdomen to be sure what is going on. 
  • Pet losing weight without reason you should have pet checked. This is not always a sign of cancer but can indicate something may be wrong. 
  • Unexplained vomiting or diarrhea should be investigated. Chronic vomiting or diarrhea can be caused by tumors on the gastrointestinal tract. The vet can use special test to determine if anything is wrong
  • If pets are bleeding from mouth, nose, penis, vagina, or gums not due to trauma they should be examined. When pets are young signs like this may occur. When pets are older they should be taken to the vet
  • Older pets with a dry non-productive cough should be taken to the vet. This is a sign of lung cancer, however there are many reasons for coughs in cats and dogs
  • Urination is another area of concern if the animal is straining to urinate or has blood in the urine. Antibiotics may help control the issues Veterinary care can determine if there is any trace of urinary cancer
  • Oral odor are common in pets because of oral tumors. Pets will change food preferences or
