Human Immunodeficiency Virus: known as HIV is an infection results in the progressive deterioration of the immune system. The virus further breaks down the body's ability to fend off certain infections and other diseases. The most advanced stage of the HIV infection is known as AIDS. The Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome is composed of more than 20 infections or related cancers.
HIV is transmitted in a number of different ways including:
- unprotected sexual intercourse including vaginal, anal, or oral sex with an infected person
- receiving a transfusion of contaminated blood, transplant or contaminated tissue
- sharing contaminated injection equipment such as needles, syringes or tattooing equipment
- a mother can give a baby HIV through pregnancy, childbirth and breastfeeding
Ways to prevent spreading HIV or getting it in the first place include:
- Instituting safe sex behaviors such as using condoms
- regular testing and if needed treatments
- using sterile needles and syringes
