Today, August 7th, is known as purple heart day. The purple heart was created by General George Washington on August 7th 1782. It is considered the first official military combat badge of the U.S. armed forces. The purple heart is a badge of Military Merit , the decoration is made up of a purple, heart shaped piece of silk, with a narrow edge of silver stitched with the word Merit across the face.
