Aloha Friday : Weekend Plans

In Hawaii, Aloha Friday is the day that we take it easy and look forward to the weekend. So I thought that on Fridays I would take it easy on posting, too. Therefore, I’ll ask a simple question for you to answer. Nothing that requires a lengthy response.

This weekend I will accompany my children on a weekend long lock in at the church that goes by the name of Disciple Now. It allows our children the time to get together and have fun with other teens as well as provides classes where they will be able to learn lessons on how to share their faith with others. My eldest son is a large part of this and I will be there helping out as well. This weekend promises to be lots of fun.

The blog Seeryus Mama has a wonderful post on fire prevention. I think this is a great post because my son in love is a fire fighter and the conversation often turns to fires and fire prevention. I also have some great friends who are fire fighters and one is actually a fire investigator. The things that these individuals see may chill you to the core.

Friday Frustration

My Friday Frustration is the frustrating problem I have been having with my internet service. It seems like at least once a day something happens that makes the internet go off. One time the internet company actually told me it would be off several days because it was not their problem it was mine but after a bit of time the internet did come back up and we ended up being part of a wide outage. When you pay such high prices for Internet coverage I would love to be able to not have the problem of it going out for several hours at a time nearly every day. I have thought about changing but not for sure what options are out there since I live in a small rural area where there are not allot of choices.

Great Northern Bean Chilli

Great Northern Bean Chilli

2 lbs bonelss skinless chicken breasts, cut in 1 inch cubes
1 T canola oil
1 (48 oz) jar northern beans, rinsed and drained
1 (16 oz) jar salsa
1 (14 1/2 oz) can chicken broth
1 t cumin, 0ptional
2 c shred cheese

Brown chicken in oil, In slow cooker mix beans, salsa, broth, cumin and chicken. Cover and cook low for 4 to 6 hours Serve with cheese

Martha Stewart Halloween Brownies

1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, cut into pieces, plus more for pan
1 1/4 cups all-purpose flour, plus more for pan
1 1/4 teaspoons coarse salt
1 cup unsweetened Dutch-process cocoa powder
2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
4 large eggs, room temperature
1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
1/2 cup packed light-brown sugar
Royal Icing
Directions
1.Preheat oven to 325 degrees. Butter a 9-by-13-inch baking pan, and line it with parchment, leaving a 2-inch overhang on 2 sides. Butter and flour parchment, tapping out excess.
2.Combine flour and salt in a small bowl. Melt butter in a medium saucepan over medium heat. Sift cocoa powder over butter, and whisk to combine. Let cool 3 minutes. Gently whisk in vanilla and eggs, then stir in sugars and flour mixture until just combined. Spread batter evenly in prepared pan.
3.Bake until top is firm and set, about 30 minutes. Transfer pan to a wire rack, and let cool for 20 minutes. Remove brownies from pan using parchment overhang, and let cool on wire rack. Cut brownies and decorate using royal icing, as desired. Brownies will keep at room temperature for up to 3 days.

Broccoli and Cheese Soup recipe

With the wonderful weather upon us I am ready for some delicious soup. Well the blog The Krazy Kitchen is hosting a meme where many have listed such great recipes and I want to share one of my own as well.

Broccoli and Cheese Soup


1 pt. half and half
1 onion, chopped
8 oz. Velveeta cheese
1 can cream of chicken soup
1 stick butter
1 pkg. frozen chopped broccoli, cooked & drained

Saute 1 onion in butter. Add cheese, soup, half and half and broccoli. Heat.

Tips to get that meal on the table

Moms are busy now days and many of us wonder if we will actually get it all done. Twenty Four hours sounds like quite a bit of time but in reality it is just often not enough time to get it all done. We want the best for our family and that includes offering them delicious and healthy meals. The problem is that many of us see that supper time hour roll around and yet have no idea what we will serve for supper. This is where the fast food, sit down and take out restraunts all end up seeing business. That is why I want to share three of my special tips in getting supper on the table.

1. Planning: it all starts with planning. I often begin with the Sunday newspaper looking for the best deals make a list of them and see what meals I can create out using the list. After this I fill in gaps in the teens favorite meals and ones that I know are economical as well. I then create a shopping list putting the meals on a piece of paper and posting this on the fridge. In order to sufice picky eaters I allow them one day to let me know if there is something on the list they will not eat. If I need to buy subs I do this or often try to figure out what is allready in the fridge freezer I can provide for subs of what they wont eat.


2. Shopping and Having ready: One thing that I know will slow me down is if I do not have items on hand at home. To solve this problem I shop once a week which saves me time and money. The night before a meal is to be made I gather all up and sit them on a shelf in the fridge. I also love to cook ahead of time if possible. I love the cookbook Make Ahead Meals for Busy Moms. This cookbook helps give guided outlines on how to prepare ahead of time, cook and freeze for later use.


3. Scheduled time: I am a big schedule person and if I schedule the time to start cooking and time to serve I do alot better with time. It is often time that throws me a curve ball and if I can ward off the time war then things will go about much smoother.

hippocratic Press Contest

Fall season is finally here and along with the lovely weather comes the terrible colds, ear aches, allergies and stomach illness. Oh my the trouble my house can find if all at once all of us are sick. It seems that the best partner to an illness is fun. But what can you do while you lay in bed and are not feeling well. Well a great book may suit the bill and what makes it even better is if one can get someone to read that book to them. The Hippocratic Press will fit the bill for both child and parent as the books have a separate part for both. These lovely books tell stories of a Dr. who is a hippo and his patients who range from a moose to polar bears. The stories help the child to take their worries off their own illness and opens the door to imagination. In the back of each book is a section for the parent where simple tips are shared that may just help your child. I know that if you are like me when you have a sick little one a simple pamphlet to read that helps you understand what you child suffers from helps out allot.

Taco In Bag

1 lb hamburger
1 tablespoon southwest seasoning
2 cups lettuce, chopped
2 tablespoons onions, finely diced
2 tomatoes, chopped
2 cups shredded cheese

1 (16 ounce) bottle Pace Picante Sauce


6 (4 ounce) bags taco chips (like Doritos)

Directions
1Brown the hamburger with the southwestern seasoning; drain.
2Open the chips bags.
3Add into each bag:.
42 tablespoons meat.
52 tablespoons lettuce.
62 tablespoons tomato.
71 pinch onion.
82 tablespoon salsa.
