Fondue Can Be A Fun Activity

Looking for something fun to do this fall and winter?/ Why not try a fondue party.

Our Favorite Basic Cheese Fondue Recipe — This is a simple recipe that you can alter to taste.
3 Cups Shredded Monterey Jack Cheese
1 Cup Shredded Swiss Cheese
1 Cup Dry White Wine (such as a Sauvignon Blanc or Reisling)
**optional: 1 clove of Garlic rubbed around the inside of the pot for flavor

Dip items such as cubed french bread, broccoli, carrots, cauliflower, mushrooms, zucchini, peppers, and cooked sausage. Be sure to cut all dipping items into bite sized pieces before serving.
Easy Broth Fondue — Use a ratio of 8 cups chicken broth to 1 cup white wine. This is best used for cooking meats.

When planning how much food to prepare for a fondue party, a good rule of thumb is:
half loaf of bread per person or 30 cubes
8-10 pieces of cubed meat per person
10 = 15 vegetable pieces per person

Happy Birthday Godzilla

The movie Godzilla is one of my husbands favorite movies was released on November 3rd in 1954. So on this day we celebrate the birthday of Godzilla. A 1954 is a Japanese film featuring Godzilla both produced and distributed by Toho. This was the first of many more movies and products to come. Two years after the original Godzilla movie was released a second movie would follow.

For supper enjoy a delicious chicken and broccoli meal. Use chopsticks to eat your supper that night.

1 spray(s) cooking spray
2 clove(s) (medium) garlic clove(s), minced
1 pound(s) uncooked boneless skinless chicken breast(s), cut into 1-inch cubes
4 medium uncooked scallion(s), chopped (green and white parts)
½ cup(s) reduced-sodium chicken broth
2 Tbsp teriyaki sauce
2 cup(s) cooked brown rice, regular or instant, kept hot
4 cup(s) uncooked broccoli, fresh, florets, steamed*
Coat a large nonstick skillet with cooking spray and set pan over medium-high heat. When hot, add garlic; cook, stirring, about 1 minute. Add chicken; cook until golden brown on all sides, stirring often, about 5 minutes.

Add scallions; cook until soft, stirring, about 2 minutes. Add broth and teriyaki sauce; simmer until chicken is cooked through and sauce reduces slightly, about 5 minutes.

Spoon ½ cup of cooked rice into each of 4 shallow bowls; spoon about 1 cup of chicken mixture and ½ cup of broccoli over each serving.
*To steam broccoli, place florets in a microwave-safe dish, add about ½ inch of water and cover dish. Microwave on high until crisp-tender, about 4 minutes. Or to steam in a saucepan, set broccoli in a steamer basket or colander over simmering water, cover and steam until crisp-tender, about 4 to 5 minutes.

Give Back This November

During the year our family finds ways to try to help out and give back. I wish I could say that our family was always on the giving side but through the years I have seen our family on both the giving and receiving ends. Many individuals that helped our family when we started out are now oldeer and are being helped by others like our own family. I believe that is what a community is. Someone is always there to offer help when it is needed.

Have you ever thought much about community service?? Community service is work that is done by a person or group of people that benefits others. Often the work or action takes place near the area where the individual lives. There is no pay involved it is on volunteer basis only Many individuals in the community such as children, senior citizens, individuals with disabilities are often helped. There are also community services that benefit animals and community service. Organizations such as local groups, places of worship, and school may all help to organize what service projects are needed done.

Often individuals who enjoy helping others and improving their community volunteer for community service. Some community service is not via volunteers but also mandated by school or judge.

  • Build a house with Habitat for Humanity.
  • Donate your old clothes.
  • Volunteer at a soup kitchen.
  • Donate old eyeglasses to an organization that collects that and distributes them to people in need.
  • Donate non-perishable food to a food bank.
  • Donate blankets to a homeless shelter.

Sandwich Day

As you can tell if you have visited my blog on one or more occasions I love to share recipes. My mother was like this very much in the meals that she cooked us. Always trying something new and different. Of course there were favorites that we had often but in between she would use cookbooks, magazines and even t.v. shows to find new recipes. I hope that you have been able to find a few great recipes here on our blog Annies Home as well. Today November 3 is Sandwich day. It is more the style of cooking my dad recalled his own mother preparing. He told me before that she always made some sort of sandwich as they were a farm family and sandwiches were easier to prepare.

Sandwiches are both convenient and the most popular and loved food item world wide. Whether you make your own sandwich or stop at one of the many sandwich shops it is a great day to have one. When Sandwich day first occurred is not a known fact. It may have been part of an advertising plot by one sandwich shop or another. Sandwiches their selves, however, have been around some time with the first sandwich recorded in the 18th century.

The 4th Earl of Sandwich created the first sandwich by placing meat between 2 slices of bread. This was done first out of necessity so that the majesty would not have to leave the poker game to attend dinner. He could eat the sandwich in one hand and continue the game with the other.

Since that time the sandwich has became a familiar food item worldwide. Some of the most popular being hamburger, ham and cheese, grilled cheese, tuna salad, PB&J and bologna. If you are looking for what pleases your taste buds most likely you can find it in a sandwich.

The Gerber Sandwich is an open faced sandwich made in St. Louis Missouri. The bread used is Italian or French spread with garlic butter and topped with ham, Provel or provolone cheese then seasoned with paprika. The sandwich is toasted.

Originating in St. Louis Missouri the Gerber Sandwich was one of my dad's favorites.

\

The Horseshoe originates in another Mid-west area, springfield Illinois.

1 (9 ounce) bag frozen steak cut french fries shopping list
1 pound ground beef
4 slices bread, toasted ( I would suggest using a more hearty bread, or even a good french roll, buttered and toasted under the broiler)
Cheese sauce:
1/2 cup butter
1/4 cup flour
2 cups heavy cream or half and half
1 teaspoon chicken base (sold where bulloin is sold)
2 cups shredded sharp cheddar cheese
salt and ground black pepper to taste (optional
Note: while this sandwich is typically prepared using a hamburger patty, you can also use sliced ham, egg and tomato, sausage, chicken, and even shrimp.! Try them all!!

Preheat the oven to 400 degrees. Spread french fries out on a baking sheet. Bake for 20 minutes in the preheated oven, or until golden brown.
Meanwhile, divide the ground beef into four equal parts and form into patties. Season with a little salt and pepper. Fry the patties in a large skillet over medium-high heat until well done, about 4 minutes per side.
To make the sauce, melt the butter in a saucepan over medium heat and whisk in the flour. Cook while stirring constantly for 4 minutes to cook out the flavor of raw flour. Gradually whisk in the cream or half-and-half, so that no lumps form. Stir in the chicken base. Bring to a simmer then remove from the heat and add the cheese; stir until melted. Season with salt, pepper, and hot sauce to taste.
Place 2 slices of toasted bread onto 2 dinner plates and top each slice with a hamburger patty. Top each patty with cooked french fries. Pour the cheese sauce on top of everything and serve immediately.

While I am from the mid-west and these two sandwiches happen to originate in the area I am nearest I know that there are sandwiches world wide. What is your favorite sandwich?? Have one that originates in or near your area?? Would love to hear about it in comments Til then have a great day and Enjoy!!!

Read Between The Lines ( A Day for Cliche's )

A cliche is a phrase or opinion that is overused and betrays a lack of original thought. Sure we have all used them but they give a sign that what we are saying or writing is very predictable or unoriginal. The word Cliche comes from French and refers to the click a printer's metal stereotyping plate would make. It implies that the message is being copied as in reproducing something unchanged. One good example of cliched style writing is the phrase "One Dark and Stormy Night"

Writing is not the only area that chiche's are over used. Job resumes and applications have seen their fair share as well. According to Red Letter resumes the top 10 most cliche' resume words are :

We have all been guilty of using a cliche in conversation. The lucky thing for you is that today is cliche day and a time to have fun using as many cliche's as you would like. So here is a short list that you can keep in mind. In comments share one of your own favorites if you please as I may want to borrow it for next year on November 3rd.

Make Up Some Felt Play Food

Do you have a pile of felt pieces sitting around following the completion of a great project?? If not then after the holidays with all the great craft ideas out there you may just have. Here is a great idea to use up a mess of felt if you ever find your self with extra.

The idea is one that will please any little hands that like to mimic in play what goes on in a real working home.

Do a search on google and you should be able to find many images of play food made from felt. Find a few of your favorites and with these in mind and your imagination in tow come up with a few of your own ideas. This would be a great project for the entire family to get involved in. Have some fun and create some great combinations. This is a great project to help your children learn simple things such as knots and threading needles.

Day 1 of A Great List of Blessings

I was once told by a preacher that God will never leave me as he loves me. Every since that day that I asked Jesus to come live in my heart forever I must say that I know that my Redeemer lives in my heart and is with me forever.

Today... Is the first day of 30 that I will be sharing what I am thankful for today I want to give thanks for my Heavenly Father and all that he is and does and how he loves me .

Crockpot Goulash

Goulash was one of those go to dishes for my mom when I was growing up. In the fall and winter when the temps outside were not so welcoming Goulash would help us all warm up. She would cook it all day and when it was supper time it was ready to eat. I hope you find this recipe a delight and who knows may also become one of your go to meals as well

Ground Beef, 80/20 - 2 Pounds
Large Yellow Onion - 1
Large Cloves Garlic, Minced - 4
Water - 3 Cups
Canned Tomato Sauce - 2 (15 Ounce)
Canned Diced Tomatoes - 2 (14.5 Ounce)
Soy Sauce - 3 Tablespoons
Dried Oregano - 2 Tablespoons
Dried Basil - 2 Teaspoons
Dried Bay Leaves - 2
Seasoned Salt - 1 Tablespoon
Black Pepper - 1/2 Teaspoon
Elbow Macaroni, Uncooked - 2 Cups

In a large Dutch oven, cook the meat over medium heat, breaking up the meat as it cooks into small pieces. Cook until the meat is cooked through and there's no longer any pink. Stir in the onions and garlic. Cook and stir the mixture until the onions are translucent.
Stir in water, tomato sauce, diced tomatoes, soy sauce, oregano, basil, bay leaves, seasoned salt, and black pepper. Bring the mixture to a boil over medium heat. Reduce the heat to low, cover, and simmer 20 minutes, stirring occasionally.
Stir in the pasta, cover, and simmer over low heat until the pasta is tender, about 25 minutes, stirring occasionally. Remove from heat, discard bay leaves, and refrigerate, if possible, overnight. If you must, you could serve. :)

The Holidays A Time To Gather Together

Here we are at the first day of November. I often refer to the last 2 months of the year as holiday months. It is often time that we travel back home to visit with loved ones. The delicious aroma coming from the food being prepared is something that delights my nose. A chance to gather around and share food with those that we love and may not have seen for a bit is something that I love to do.

Many of those that prepared those delicious dishes have slowly passed into a better place. It has become my job to entertain those that come back home and gather at our house. Quality family time is something that I want to share with all those that I love. What is it that you love the most about the holidays??

During the next few weeks I hope to share many stories of the old days when I would travel home to see family. Grandmothers who were very alike but different as well. We always had lunch with one and supper with the other. I will be sharing many recipes of yesterday and so much more I hope you will be here to read all that I have to share.

If We Could Only Travel Back To Yester Year

Over the river, and through the wood,
To Grandfather's house we go;
The horse knows the way to carry the sleigh
through the white and drifted snow.

Over the river, and through the wood -
Oh, how the wind does blow!
It stings the toes and bites the nose
As over the ground we go.

Over the river, and through the wood,
To have a first-rate play.
Hear the bells ring, "Ting-a-ling-ding",
Hurrah for Thanksgiving Day!

Over the river, and through the wood
Trot fast, my dapple-gray!
Spring over the ground like a hunting-hound,
For this is Thanksgiving Day.

Over the river, and through the wood -
And straight through the barnyard gate,
We seem to go extremely slow,
It is so hard to wait!

Over the river, and through the wood -
Now Grandmother's cap I spy!
Hurrah for the fun! Is the pudding done?
Hurrah for the pumpkin pie!

Mischief Night

Is mischief night all done in the spirit of Halloween fun?? Do those who toilet paper the bushes and trees mean to be mean or are they just celebrating the season??

While my grand-father was not a bad boy he did partake in behavior that may not have made him look the best. I recall him telling me stories of him turning over out houses, soaping windows and other activities on Halloween night.

One thing that many punks used to do around Halloween was to smash pumpkins. What destruction

Where you ever involved in mischief?? What was it that you saw happen on the eve of Halloween and Halloween night??

Make Your Own Candy Corn

Candy Corn is a popular candy found in the United States and Canada. Traditionally it is around during Halloween season. Candy corn traditionally has a broad yellow end, a tapered orange center and pointed white tip. It is meant to mimic a kernel of corn. Candy corn is made up of a list ingredients including sugar, corn syrup, confectioner's wax, and artificial coloring.

When this candy first hit the market during the 1880s it went by the name of chicken feed. The Wunderlee Candy company was the early candy producers who introduced this candy.

Make Your Own Candy Corn Cookies

2 sticks butter, softened
1.5 cups powdered sugar
1 tbsp vanilla extract
1 egg
½ tsp baking soda
½ tsp salt
3 cups flour
red food coloring
yellow food coloring

Cream together the sugar and butter until light and fluffy. Add the egg and vanilla and continue to beat until incorporated.
In another bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda and salt. Add dry ingredients to the butter sugar mixture and mix until a soft dough just forms.
Remove dough from mixer bowl and separate into three equal pieces (use a food scale to weigh each piece if you want to be exact!). Mix together a little bit of red and yellow food coloring to make orange and then add the orange coloring to one of the dough pieces. Make another dough piece yellow and leave the third plain.
Place a piece of plastic wrap or tin foil inside a loaf pan and pat down the white dough inside. Place the orange dough on top (pat down firmly) followed by the yellow dough. Remove dough from pan, wrap up in either tin foil or plastic wrap and refrigerate overnight or for at least four hours.
When you are ready to bake your cookies, preheat your oven to 350 degrees. Cut 1/4th inch slices down the width of the dough. Continue cutting each slice into small triangles.
Place triangles on a lined baking sheet and bake for 6-8 minutes until tops are puffy and bottoms are golden.
Yield: 5 dozen tiny cookies

Hermit Cookies

Hermit cookies were the cherished cookie of those that worked and traveled on the Clipper ships. Cape Cod Massachusetts was the location that these Hermits originated and was also a great stop along the way of many clipper ships.

Sailors could store the cookies easily in canisters. The canisters would be kept on the ship and would keep the sailors company on the long sea voyages. In the same manner that the sailors kept their cherished cookies those who take lunches on short or long hauls will cherish them as well. Wanting to send a treat to someone you love through the mail?? Then consider sending hermits they ship well as well.

Loaded with raisins and nuts the hermit cookie has a simple soft and chewy texture. Hermit cookies are enjoyed in both the United States and Canada. Canadians often include dates with the raisin and nuts in their hermits. The cookies may be decorated with a sugar glaze or left plan.

Easy Hermits Cookies Recipe

1 cup packed brown sugar
1/4 cup butter, softened
1/4 cup shortening
1/4 cup cold coffee

1 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
1/2 teaspoon baking soda

National Cat Day

I am a genuine cat lover have been for some time. I grew up with a mother who loved cats and every cat she had a name for. Some liked to think of her as the "crazy cat" lady that owned all the cats but this was true but we never complained. We simply took care of the cat(s) Today we have a cat that knows he rules the roost. I know he is male but he was also given the nickname of  "Queen" We love "Queen" and he knows it

Do you have a kitty or cat that you love?? Well then be sure to give them an extra cuddle today as it is National Cat Day. Spoiling cats is great fun for both the owner of the cat and the cat as well. So you don't have a cat but you would like to have one? Then check out the local animal shelters. Love cats but can not for whatever reason have one of your own then consider donating to the ASPCA.

Cat Day was founded in 2005 by animal welfare advocate Colleen Paige. She started this day to draw awareness to adopting shelter cats. Each year around 4 million cats can be found in shelters about 1/2 of these sadly will be euthanized.

Cat Day is a great day to celebrate your love of your cat but also to help draw awareness to the fact that we should not shop but adopt. In addition, remind cat owners to spay and neuter pets

Would You Know If Someone Was Having A Stroke

A stroke occurs when blood flow to an area of the brain is cut off. It is like a "brain attack" that deprives brain cells of oxygen and begins to die. If brain cells do die off during a stroke the brain loses abilities that were controlled by that area of the brain. This may include memory, muscle control among others.

An individual who suffers a stroke may be affected in a variety of ways. This all depends on where the stroke occurs in the brain and how much of the brain is damaged. Small strokes may only have minor problems where larger strokes may be permanently paralyzed on one side of their body or ability to speak. It is possible to recover from a stroke but more than 2/3 of those who survive a stroke will have a disability.

Most if not all of us know an individual that has suffered at least one stroke. An average of 800,000 individuals will experience a new or recurrent stroke. In the next minute someone will have suffered a stroke. In the next 4 minutes someone will die from a stroke. Strokes are the leading cause of adult disability in the United States. This is why we must help get out the information about strokes and support those who have all ready suffered. Up to 80 percent of strokes can be prevented.

F: Face drooping. Ask the person to smile, and see if one side is drooping. One side of the face may also be numb, and the smile may appear uneven.

A: Arm weakness. Ask the person to raise both arms. Is there weakness or numbness on one side? One arm drifting downward is a sign of one-sided arm weakness.

S: Speech difficulty. People having a stroke may slur their speech or have trouble speaking at all. Speech may be incomprehensible. Ask the person to repeat a simple sentence and look for any speech abnormality.

T: Time to call 9-1-1! If a person shows any of the symptoms above, even if the symptoms went away, call 9-1-1 and get the person to a hospital immediately.

Psoriasis Awareness

Psoriasis is a skin disorder that is both unpredictable and irritating. Skin cells can multiply up to 10 times faster than normal. The cells under the skins surface will die, and cause raised red plaques covered with white scales. The most common areas that Psoriasis will affect are knees, elbows and the scalp but other areas like the torso, palms, and feet soles can be affected as well.

Those that are affected by psoriasis can also have psoriatic arthritis. The pain and swelling in the joints caused by psoriasis. Between 10 to 30 percent of individuals with psoriasis will also have psoriatic arthritis.

Today, October 29, is World Psoriasis day. Annually on this day people with psoriasis or psoriasis arthritis gather to provide support to each other and help draw awareness. Over 125 million people suffer from this disease. The International Federation of Psoriasis Association helps offer support as well as advocate and share awareness of Psoriasis.
