Conversation Heart Wreath

Have fun creating conversation heart wreath. Easy enough for your child to make but nice enough to hang on the front door this wreath makes a lovely presentation for Valentines Day. You can find easy to make direcetion here

9" dinner plate or paper plate

Recycled cereal box or other thin cardboard

Pencil

Scissors

Heart pattern

Construction paper: pink, purple, red, and blue

Markers, crayons or paint pens

Glue sticks

Yarn for hanger (optional)

Pattern

Trace around the 9" plate onto the cardboard. Use your pen or pencil to draw another circle inside that one, about an inch away from the outside circle. Cut out the circle and the center of the circle to create a cardboard wreath base. Fold a piece of scrap paper in half. Using the heart pattern line up the fold line of the scrap paper with the dotted line of the pattern. Cut out the shape so that when you open it, you have a heart shape. Fold the short end of a piece of construction paper up about 3 inches. Place the folded heart around the folded paper and trace the half heart shape into the paper. You should be able to fit three hearts on the paper. Repeat this step for each colored piece of paper; you will have a total of 12 hearts.
Cut out all the hearts and flatten out the creases so that the hearts lay flat. Using markers, crayons, or paint pens, write conversation candy phrases on the hearts such as "LOVE", "HUBBA HUBBA", "SWEET", "LOVE", "BE MINE", "KISS" and "PAL". Arrange your hearts on top of the cardboard wreath shape without gluing them down. Once you have them where you want them, use the glue stick to attach each one.  wreath as is or attach a piece of looped yarn to the back as a hanger.

Peppered Peanut Brittle

Cooking spray
1 1/2 cups sugar
1/3 cup light-colored corn syrup
3 tablespoons water
1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract
1 teaspoon fresh lemon juice
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 1/2 cups roasted peanuts
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon butter
1/2 teaspoon crushed red pepper
1/4 teaspoon cracked black pepper
1/8 teaspoon ground red pepper

Coat a large jelly roll pan with cooking spray.
Combine sugar and next 5 ingredients (sugar through salt) in a large saucepan; bring to a boil over medium-high heat. Cook 10 minutes or until sugar dissolves and candy thermometer registers 325°, stirring occasionally. Remove mixture from heat; stir in peanuts and remaining ingredients. (The baking soda will cause the mixture to bubble and become opaque.)
Quickly pour mixture into prepared pan, spreading to edges. Let stand 1 hour; break into pieces.

Happy Chinese New Year

Happy Chinese New Year!!! Today February 3, 2011 is the first day of the Chinese New Year and so I thought we would celebrate with a delicious noodle dish
Any type of noodle—thin chow mein noodles to broad rice noodles to the thicker Shanghai wheat noodles—is a must at Chinese New Year's. However, long noodles represent a long unbroken life (so cutting them into shorter strands would symbolically shorten your life). Pull out your largest skillet or wok because this recipe creates a full pan.

Yield: 8 servings (serving size: about 3/4 cup)

Ingredients

1 pound fresh Asian-style wheat noodles

1 1/2 tablespoons Shaoxing (Chinese rice wine) or dry sherry

1 1/2 teaspoons hoisin sauce

1/2 teaspoon cornstarch

6 ounces boneless pork tenderloin cut into 2 x 1/4–inch julienne strips

3 tablespoons dark soy sauce

2 tablespoons oyster sauce

1 tablespoon low-sodium soy sauce

1/2 teaspoon sugar

2 tablespoons canola oil, divided

3 cups chopped napa (Chinese) cabbage

1/2 teaspoon minced garlic

1 1/4 cups (1-inch) slices green onions

Preparation

1. Cook noodles according to package directions, omitting fat and salt. Drain and rinse with cold water; drain. Set aside.

2. Combine wine, hoisin sauce, and cornstarch in a small bowl, stirring with a whisk. Add pork; stir to coat. Cover and let stand 10 minutes.

3. Combine dark soy sauce, oyster sauce, low-sodium soy sauce, and sugar in a small bowl, stirring with a whisk; set mixture aside.

4. Heat 1 teaspoon oil in a wok or large skillet over high heat. Add cabbage to pan; stir-fry 2 minutes. Transfer cabbage to a bowl.

5. Heat 2 teaspoons oil in pan. Add garlic; stir-fry 10 seconds or until fragrant. Add pork mixture; stir-fry 3 minutes or until done. Add pork mixture to bowl with cabbage.

6. Wipe pan clean with paper towels; return to heat. Heat remaining 1 tablespoon oil. Add reserved noodles; stir-fry 1 minute. Add onions and soy sauce mixture to pan; stir-fry 1 minute. Add pork mixture; stir to combine. Cook 1 minute or until hot.

8 hard taco shells, warmed

1 avocado, sliced

The blog Day 2 Day Living alerted me to the fact that Feb 1 to Feb 7 is dedicated to Womens Hearth Health. My mother suffers from heart problems and having inherited many of my parents health conditions I try to stay up to date with what is going on.

Heart Disease is the number one killer of American women. Recognizing symptoms and risks, making lifestyle changes and getting timely care can save a woman's life. Women's Heart Week is a national outreach campaign aimed at improving women's outcomes from this deadly disease. Heart disease is America’s leading killer of women over the age of 34. Most women are not aware of this fact and fail to recognize their own risk factors for heart disease. Women’s symptoms, especially those that are milder, often go ignored. Women often miss out on critical opportunites to save their own lives. Women's Heart Foundation (WHF) recognizes that women are busier than ever as they juggle career, family and care-giving responsibilities. For many, each day resembles a jig–saw puzzle in which a woman is required to piece together her time and obligations. Now, more than ever, women need to take time out for themselves and be given a reminder: Take Care of Your Heart.

Some scary statistics for you to think about as well:

Less than one-third (31.8 percent) of U.S. adults get regular leisure-time physical activity (defined as light or moderate activity five times or more per week for 30 minutes or more each time and/or vigorous activity three times or more per week for 20 minutes or more each time). About 10 percent of adults do no physical activity at all in their leisure time.

Nearly two-thirds of U.S. adults are overweight (BMI > 25, which includes those who are obese).[7] All adults (20+ years old): 129.6 million (64.5 percent) Women (20+ years old): 64.5 million (61.9 percent) Men (20+ years old): 65.1 million (67.2 percent) Nearly one-third of U.S. adults are obese (BMI > 30). All adults (20+ years old): 61.3 million (30.5 percent) Women (20+ years old): 34.7 million (33.4 percent) Men (20+ years old): 26.6 million (27.5 percent)

About 25 percent of young people (ages 12–21 years) participate in light to moderate activity (e.g., walking, bicycling) nearly every day. About 50 percent regularly engage in vigorous physical activity. Approximately 25 percent report no vigorous physical activity, and 14 percent report no recent vigorous or light to moderate physical activity.

Quick Chicken Noodle Soup

Photobucket
Not enough time Miz Helen’s Country Cottageto make the old fashioned Chicken Noodle Soup like mom and grandma did? Still want the similiar taste that you enjoyed? Well try this recipe from my recipes  and see what you think

2 cups water

1 (32-ounce) carton fat-free, less-sodium chicken broth

1 tablespoon olive oil

1/2 cup prechopped onion

1/2 cup prechopped celery

1/2 teaspoon salt

1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper

1 medium carrot, chopped

6 ounces fusilli pasta

2 1/2 cups shredded skinless, boneless rotisserie chicken breast

2 tablespoons chopped fresh flat-leaf parsley

Combine 2 cups water and chicken broth in a microwave-safe dish, and microwave at HIGH for 5 minutes. While broth mixture heats, heat a large saucepan over medium-high heat. Add oil to pan; swirl to coat. Add onion, celery, salt, pepper, and carrot; sauté 3 minutes or until almost tender, stirring frequently. Add hot broth mixture and pasta; bring to a boil. Cook 7 minutes or until pasta is almost al dente. Stir in chicken; cook 1 minute or until thoroughly heated. Stir in parsley.

Kitchen Notes

Heat the broth mixture in the microwave to jump-start the cooking. Meanwhile, sauté the aromatic ingredients in your soup pot to get this dish under way. Though we like the shape of fusilli, you can also make this soup with wide egg noodles, rotini, or even orzo.

Wednesday HodgePodge

1. Would you rather be seen as a person who did their duty or forged their own path?

I would rather be a person who did a bit of both While I feel it is the right of individuals to do our duty in all fields of life I have always been one to do my own thing in life and never follow the given path

2. This week's Wednesday Hodgepodge happens to fall on Groundhog's Day. In keeping with that theme, if you could have a do-over of any one day out of the last seven, which day would it be and why. If you haven't seen the movie Groundhog Day this question will make absolutely no sense but that's okay....you can answer anyway.

Friday was a real good day yet there were things I would love to have added and a few moments where I could have taken them away

You thought my question was going to be weather related didn't you?

well it very well could have been but then I am a bit tired talking about the weather myself what is to be will be what is not to be won't

3. Hot cocoa...yay or nay on the marshmallows?

I love little mallows with cocoa but I can drink the cocoa alone as well if need be

4. Do you wear makeup every day? What are the top two must haves in your daily makeup routine?

I only wear makeup on special occasions daily I just brush my hair put it up and spray a bit of perfume on to head to work

5. Is it more important to you in a relationship to be loved or understood?

love is mighty powerful tool but if you are not understood then love is not powerful enough

6. Parsley sage rosemary or thyme... your favorite?

depends on what we are eating sage is mighty good in several of my favorite recipes

7. What do you do when you feel angry?

talk to God and try to calm down he is the only one that understands no matter what
8. Insert your own random thought here

Matthew 16:2-3 ESV / 7 helpful votes

He answered them, “When it is evening, you say, ‘It will be fair weather, for the sky is red.’ And in the morning, ‘It will be stormy today, for the sky is red and threatening.’ You know how to interpret the appearance of the sky, but you cannot interpret the signs of the times.

Crispy Roasted Chicken Wings

3 lbs. chicken wings, rinsed and patted dry with paper towels

2 Tbsp. corn oil

Salt

Freshly ground black pepper

Heat the oven to 375°F. Put the chicken wings in a large roasting pan, drizzle with the oil, and sprinkle liberally with salt and pepper. Toss to coat and spread the wings out in a single layer.

Roast, undisturbed, until the bottom of the pan is coated with fat and the wings are beginning to brown, about 15 minutes. Use a spoon to baste the wings with the drippings, then carefully pour the extra fat out of the pan and flip them over (if they're sticking give them an extra 5 minutes).

Return wings to the oven until both sides are nicely browned, another 10 minutes or so (they'll release easily from the pan when ready).

Raise the oven temperature to 450°F and continue to cook until wings are crisp all over, about 10 minutes. Serve hot, warm, or at room temperature with carrot and celery sticks on the side.
