Triscuit and Urban Farming team up

TRISCUIT

I grew up in Rural Illinois where farming was not only a hobby but a way of life. Both of my grandparents were farmers with hundreds of acres of corn, wheat and bean fields. My children grew up in town where they saw their own grandmother and me their mother grow gardens, flowers and fruit. one does not have to have hundreds of acres or a large garden to learn the greatness of gardening. A simple plot of land, a container or even a bucket to grow a few plants in will give the gardener both the pride of raising their own plants as well as being able to eat the delicious produce that they grow.

Triscuit has created a website and movement to help all those from rural areas to urban communities to start home farms all over the country. Triscuit has teamed up with Urban Farming (a non profit organization) to help all gardeners beginners to more seasoned gardeners to learn more about the deliciously fresh, penny wise, healthier way of gardening.

Inside specially marked Triscuit boxes you will find dill and basil seeds that will help you get started on farming your own garden at home. Triscuit and Urban Farming are sowing seeds together to create 50 new community based farms throughout the U.S. in hopes to harvest enough food to help those in need while raising diversity, education of youth, adults and seniors and provide an environmentally sustainable system to uplift communities. If you would like to get involved you can find out more information here

“I wrote this review while participating in a blog tour campaign by Mom Central on behalf of Triscuit and received the product necessary to facilitate my candid review. In addition, I received a gift card to thank me for taking the time to participate.”

Stomach Problems When You Just Cant Go

I know we often do not want to talk about the subject of Constipation but there are times that i wish someone would share some advice and since I found a great informational post on the every day health website i thought I would share some tips they shared:
  • eat more fiber: nuts, veggies and whole grains are great sources
  • drink more liquids : the best sources are fruit juices and water
  • exercising : 30 minutes a day will make a big difference

How as little as $5 will help others

With all the great tips you can find on Frugal Fridays here at Life As Mom as well as other great blogs you have gathered up lots of ideas to save money if you are anything like me. Now I want to share a few things you can do to help others and yourself with as little as $5

  • by donating $1 to feedingamerica.org you can donate 10 lbs of food. Feeding America will help provide food to more than 25 million low income people in America

  • save $5 a week every week for 10 years will give you $3,371 of college savings plan for your child.

  • make someone smile by feeding a parking meter that will soon expire, buy a cup of coffee for someone that looks like they could use one, give the waitress a bit of a tip

  • purchase $5 worth of pencils for your local school you will be surprised how many children do not have school supplies or even a pencil to write with

these are just a few great ideas of how you can help others with as little as $5. That $5 will go a long way to making others happy and you feel a bit proud of what you are doing.

There will be coupons

If you are like me you prepare a meal plan, budget and often set aside coupons that you will use. The wonderful thing about knowing if coupons and what coupons will be in the weekend paper is knowing what if any coupons you will be using for the upcoming budget as well as you may get a great coupon to create a meal around. Anyways for your sneak preview you can go here as there should be two sets of coupons in the papers this week one from smartsource and the other from redplum

thanks $5 for dinners for sharing this with readers like me and others

Last Spring was Beautiful

lessons learned when having troubles in the world of parenting

Dear...sisters, when troubles come your way, consider it an opportunity for great joy. For you know that when your faith is tested, your endurance has a chance to grow." James 1:2-3 (NLT)

Oh my some days as a mom we feel that if anything else goes wrong we may just loose it all. Last night was a day like that for me. One rebellious teen can shake the rest of a set of parents trying their best. It is so hard at times to explain why there are rules and why these rules must be followed. I hate to be the bad guy but when rules are broke then the time comes when I must become the enforcer alongside of my husband. I love the verse above because it shows love and encouragement in a way that I needed it today. The troubled moments an opportunity to become a source of great joy. That would be wonderful and does happen more often than not but the Joy is not always something that happens immediately sometimes it takes time for understanding to set in. However, through it all my endurance, lessons and the opportunity to share what I learn with others does happen. That is all lessons in parenting it seems no matter what step you are on infants, toddlers, school age and yes teenagers prayer and the love we receive from our Heavenly father keeps us going.

Importance of Breakfast for Children

We have for a long time heard that feeding children breakfast before school helps them to do better in school. That is exactly right and if you need more about why a breakfast is good for children here are a few:

  • I have often heard that breakfast is the most important meal of the day and I believe it is since it starts the day off with a boost of energy
  • Kids who start the day with a healthy meal are more likely to play sports and be more physically active. I believe this is because the child feels better with a bit of energy and will join in more often to play than the one that is tired, hungry without the good breakfast

Some good breakfast ideas that include less sugar that often make children feel tired are:

  • whole grain low sugar cereal with low fat milk and fresh fruit
  • yogurt berry parfait with granola
  • whole grain english muffin with Peanut butter and jelly and glass of low fat milk
  • scrambled eggs and toast
  • turkey bacon or sausage

Eating right not only gives your child a good boost in the morning but also starts off a life of great nutrition values as well.

Aloha Friday: Rebellion

Its Friday and in Hawaii that means that is a day to take it easy. That is why the blog An Island Life host the meme Aloha Friday. A day for all bloggers to come together, take it easy, ask simple questions and answer without a lot of thought.
My question this week has to do with my teens. As the weather gets warmer rebellion I believe becomes more and more real. So my question for you is:
was you a rebellious teen? If you have rebellious teens I would love any advice on how to keep them busy so they have less time to get into trouble.

Potato Burgers recipe

Are you looking for a vegetarian recipe that will suit your burger taste? Well here is one for Potato burgers that I found on the quality health website

Potato Burgers

2 tbsp milk
2 cups mashed potatoes
1 tbsp flour
1 egg
salt and pepper, to taste
1/4 cup vegetable oil

Combine first 5 ingredients, mixing thoroughly. Shape into burgers, about .5 in. thick. In a skillet, heat the oil and add the burgers. Cook for about 5-6 minutes, or until well-browned.

Pulled Pork with Coleslaw dinner

The pulled pork:
4 1/2 pounds pork butt on the bone
1 (14.5 oz.) can chicken broth
1 tablespoon distilled vinegar
1 cup barbecue sauce

The coleslaw:
1 (1 lb.) bag shredded cabbage
1/2 cup plain low-fat yogurt
1/2 cup light mayonnaise
1 tablespoon distilled white vinegar
1 teaspoon sugar

Place pork (in 1 piece), chicken broth and vinegar in a slow cooker. Cover and cook for 8 hours on low. Move pork to a plate and, using 2 forks, shred meat and transfer it to a large saucepan. Strain liquid; add 1 cup of it to pork. (Reserve remaining juices for later use.) Stir barbecue sauce into pork. Place cabbage, yogurt, mayonnaise, vinegar and sugar in a large bowl; toss well.
Reheat pork, adding juice for desired moisture. Serve with coleslaw.

I love this style of dinner and often partake in it. When we were away in St. Louis we were able to eat at a barbq joint that was delicious. Tried the chicago style sauce and believe it is my favorite of all time

Thankful Thursday: friends, faith, church events and yes the beautiful weather

This week has been one full of prayer for a friend of mine. My friend got sick Sunday evening and ended up in the E.R. now nearly a week later she is still in hospital. My prayer is that the doctors have wisdom and her strength continues carrying her on. I am so thankful that her strength and belief are solid as a rock.

I am thankful that my boys were asked to participate in an event at a church. This event called carry the light will be on Sunday and Monday evenings and I know that all involved are very much excited to share the light with those who come. I am also thankful for the leaders of our church and all that they do to lead us. Recently the minister of music at our church was able to be on live T.V. news and here is what he had to say. We were all so very proud of him for sharing the word and being exactly like he is in real life.

I am thankful for the lovely weather that we have been experiencing, for my red tulip that came up out of no where. My mother said a tulip came up where she had none planted as well. I wonder if this is a sign or blessing from no where. How wonderful it is to have a surprise such as a red tulip where it was not to be.

What are you thankful for today? Share at Spiritually Unequal Marriage or read what others have to share there.

Be Prepared for the Storms with Energizer giveaway

My daughter just called me and told me that she was under a tornado warning. With her just a few hours away from me we normally get the same weather she sees shortly somewhere behind her. The storm was coming and I needed to prepare. Eventually the storm did come and I was prepared because I had received an weather preparedness pack from the Energizer company. Without it we would have had to run around find a flashlight, make sure the batteries were in the weather radio and make sure we had it all together. With the Weather Preparedness pack from the Energizer company I had everything in the same place and ready to go.

The Energizer company has teamed up with the International Association of Fire Chiefs (IAFC) and the American Meteorological Society (AMS) to help prepare families for whatever weather situations spring, summer and hurricane seasons they may see. With my son in law working for the fire department where he works I learned quickly that firemen do not like candles. They are so easy to be knocked off and easily start fires that is why the flashlight is so important to be kept in a location that can be found easily.

A list of items to include in the Emergency Power Kit and have on hand to be prepared for weather situations include:

•Battery-powered radio or crank radio, to keep your family apprised of current weather-related news.
•Plenty of extra batteries. Energizer® Ultimate Lithium and Energizer® MAX® batteries (AA, AAA, C, D and 9-volt) provide long-lasting power before, during and after the storm. Lithium batteries have a long storage life, perform well in extreme temperatures and are perfect for use in LED flashlights and other high-tech devices, while Energizer® MAX® batteries are an ideal power source for standard flashlights and lanterns.
•Flashlight for every member of the family. Use flashlights instead of candles when the power goes out. Energizer® Weatheready™ lights feature long-lasting LED technology. With versatile flashlights and area lights, the Weatheready™line is designed to keep your family out of the dark.
•Battery-powered cell phone charger, to help keep the lines of communication open. Energizer Energi To Go® power packs help keep cell phones charged.
•Extra specialty batteries. Your health is your most important asset. Specialty batteries power critical health devices like hearing aids and blood glucose and blood pressure monitors

To make sure that you are prepared for any situation in addition to the Emergency Power Kit you should have water, non perishable food, medical records, and insurance papers. Visit the Energizer Company here to get even more great tips to be prepared

The International Association of Fire Chiefs represents over 1.2 million firefighters and emergency responders. They have teamed up with the Energizer company on the long time campaign of Change Your Clock Change Your Battery to promote working smoke Alarms and carbon dioxide detectors The American Meteorological Society has a website at ww.ametsoc.org desire to inform and teach others about the science behind weather. With a membership of more than 14,000 professionals, professors, students and weather enthusiasts.

The Energizer Company has put together weather preparedness pack and sent me two one for me to review and one for one of Annies Home lucky readers.

Enter this giveaway by letting me know a tip on how you are prepared for the storms that may soon brew. Share in a comment one way that you are prepared to help protect you and your family in case the lights go out.

I received the same preparedness pack that I am offering for giveaway from the Energizer company. This did not influence my thoughts, viewpoint or the writing of this post in any way.

tips keep carpet looking great in messy weather

I am not sure about you but I know that spring and summer bring more than sun and fun. It also brings rain which makes mud, koolaid which makes stains and perfectly painted toes and we don't even want to talk about the mess it can leave behind. Here are some useful tips that you may find helpful in this messy weather:

  • koolaid and red pop cleans up easily when you quickly clean it up with the club soda. However, if it is like alot of stains that are not noticed til a bit later still try the club soda which should help to lighten the stain. You may also want to try hydrogen peroxide or undiluted lemon juice. Wait 15 minutes and blot Continue to apply and check your progress to make sure it is working

  • nailpolish can be cleaned up by nail polish remover easily using a eye dropper or a nonsilver spoon, blotting immediately after each application. but if this harms the carpet then you may want to try hydrogen peroxide to lighten the stain

  • mud cover wet mud with salt or baking soda and let dry before touching. vacuum dried mud if you have the red dirt that is found in certain areas you may want to try a rust remover but first try in small area to make sure it will not harm carpet.

If you have a spill and no carpet spotter grab the shaving cream. This works well with makeup, lipstick, coffee, and tea messes. work into spot well and rinse with cold water or club soda

MyPacifier.com review and giveaway

I love personalized goodies for me and the ones I love. My grand baby went from taking a bottle to taking a pacifier. While her teeth may not rot due to sucking a bottle she is now comforted with a paci. So what is better than a pacifier that says her name? MyPacifier has the cutest personalized pacifiers around. This way in the church nursery or anywhere that Princess travels they will know that the pacifier belongs to her.

Here is a bit of information about MyPacifier, the first company to start selling personalized pacifiers in the USA. The company originated in Dutch by a mother named Pia who tired of the missing and switched pacifiers once and for all. This problem is known by mothers and those who care for little ones all to well. The pacifiers is either lost, ends up in another child's mouth or is picked up for fear of spreading germs and bacteria. Pia wanted to find pacifiers with her child's name on them but always heard the same answer in all the shops, buy a permanent marker pen and write his name on the pacifier or stick a name tag on it. This prompted Pia to create a website in Denmark where she would sell personalized pacifiers. From there the desire to own such pacifiers spread throughout the world including the U.S.

Buy: you can shop and buy your choice of pacifier on the MyPacifier website

Splenda Making My Life Sweeter

When I was diagnosed with diabetes I thought it was the worst penalty I could face. After several years of learning to change my life style I now know that great products such as Splenda has helped make life easier. I always worried about the sweeteners of my childhood would sneak up and bite me one year. Several of these were bitter and I had no desire to have to use them. Splenda on the other hand is so easy to use and has a great taste as well.

Can you imagine having goodies such as Apple pie, chocolate chips and even sweet coffee being better for you? Well I can and have and love using splenda in my daily life. Splenda helps me to enjoy the things I used to and that my family still does. The best thing about using Splenda is there is no need to think about it. You simply use the same amount of Splenda as you would sugar making life easier as well as sweeter. To find wonderful recipes simply visit this link

I wrote this review while participating in a blog tour campaign by Mom Central on behalf of Splenda and received products necessary to facilitate my candid review. In addition, a donation was made in my name to the Meals on Wheel organization to thank me for taking the time to participate.”
