Hypothermia awareness

This winter so far we have not seen as many cold days as we have seen in past years. That does not mean they are not yet to come. When the cold does arrive do you know what to do to stay warm?? If you do not stay warm there is danger of hypothermia. Hypothermia occurs when body temp get very low and can be very dangerous for certain populations. Children and elderly adullts are among the population of individuals that have higher chances of suffering from hypothermia. If hypothermia does occur the result may bring with it kidney problems, liver damage or worst. Therefore one must be careful when spending outside in the cold or inside a cold house.

Tips to help you stay warm:
  • Wear long johns under your clothes in order to keep warm. If that is still not enough throw a blanket over your legs and wear socks and slippers.
  • Use extra covers on the bed. I can recall my grandmother kept quilts that were only to be used on the beds in winter.
  •  Set the temp in the house at 68 degrees. What can an older person do to keep a normal body temperature?

Shivering is a good sign that someone is cold. It is a natural way that the body has to stay warm. However, there are other signs that someone is in danger of having hypothermia. Many of these signs are included under the "umble" category.

  • confusion, stumbling and sleepiness
  • slowed slurred speech as well as mumbling
  • change in behavior grumbling as well in how the person looks
  • weak pulse and poor control over body movement
  • slow reactions  and shallow breathing
