It's Umbrella Day

Each year on February 10th national Umbrella is celebrated The umbrella is considered by some to be one of the world's most useful inventions. They not only help to keep the rain from getting us wet but also can protect us from the sun and wind. In fact , many have used umbrellas as fashion accessories as well.




The word umbrella means shade or shadow. Brits have been known to use the slang word brolly when speaking of the umbrella and during the late 19th century the word Bumbershoot was used as well. While the umbrella was invented over 4,000 years as proven by ancient art and artifacts in ancient Greece and Egypt, it was the Chinese that first waterproofed the umbrella.

By waxing and lacquering the paper parasols to protect the user from the elements the umbrella could be used in the rain. One of the first  umbrella shops that existed was in London England.
