Unchain a Dog Month

Chaining a dog 24 hours a day 7 days a week is not only inhumane but unsafe for dogs. Dogs are social beings that thrive on interaction with people and animals. If a dog stays alone chained up all the time they can suffer psychological damage and demonstrate anxiety and aggression. In addition chains can be harsh to their skin

A dogs neck can become infected from wearing a collar that is to tight. Chains get tangled up causing it to draw tighter and strangle the dog. Dogs that are chained up without shelter are unable to escape storms or attacking animals. While you may not realize it chaining a dog up can be a safety hazard for people as well.

Dogs are territorial animals. If and when they are confronted with a threat, their fight or flight instinct kicks in. When a dog is unable to flee because of a chain they may feel forced to fight. Dogs like this may attack those who cross the dog's territory.

The United States Department of Agriculture states that dogs that are confined to a chain are often significantly restricted in movement. The chain can become tangled and hooked on other objects even more restricting movement. In 1997 the USDA ruled that dogs should not be continuously chained.
