Penguin Awareness Day

January 20th is a date perfect for penguins because it is penguin awareness day. The day for Penguin Awareness was created to celebrate a beloved animal, the penguin. Penguins can be loved all year long and can often be seen at zoos and penguin sanctuaries.

Penguins are a group of aquatic, flightless birds living almost exclusively in the Southern Hemisphere. Antarctica is one of the main areas of the world to host penguins. Penguins will spend half their life on land and the other half in oceans. Because of the joint life events the birds colored dark and white have adapted their wings to become like flippers.

Penguins use their flipper like wings to help in aquatic measures. The birds wings were flightless but in the water penguins are very agile. Their swimming skills resemble very much a bird in flight. The wings create a brush of air that ensures buoyancy. The layer of air also helps the birds in cold water. Penguins can move quite easily in water. However, movement on land for penguins can be a bit difficult.

On land, penguins will either waddle on their feet or slide on their bellies across the snow. This movement is known as "tobogganing" and helps the penguin conserve energy. Penguins can also jump with both feet if they want to move  quickly or go across steep rocky terrain.

While many of us know one or a few types of penguins the following chart may help just a bit.

Out of the species of penguins shown most are endangered.

Did You Know (about penguins)

  • Penguins are extremely short sighted on land but see very well under water
  • Newborn penguins can not enter the water as their feathers are not waterproof
  • Penguin species have different colored feet For example the Gentoo has orange feet while the Adelie penguin has pink feet
  • Penguins are one of around 40 species of flightless birds.
  • Penguins do not have teeth. Instead they have spines on their beak and tongue to help them grip their prey.
  • Penguins can stay underwater for up to 15 minutes before needing to surface for another breath
  • Penguins pant like dogs to prevent overheating.
  • Some Prehistoric penguins were as large as people!
