My Favorite Singer Dolly Parton celebrates Birthday

I have shared on Annies Home how I grew up a girl from a small town who spent many hours and days at her grandparents farms. Following up with a bit about me let me tell you that one of my earliest favorite groups was Dolly Parton.

Dolly Rebecca Parton was born January 19, 1946. The one room cabin on the banks of Little Pigeon River Tennessee was the birthplace of Dolly. The fourth of twelve children born to her parents Robert Lee and Avie Parton. Her daddy worked the land in the mountains of east Tn. starting out as a sharecropper then with his own farm. To make end meets he also worked many side jobs despite the fact he could neither read nor write Nonetheless Dolly considered her daddy the smartest person she ever met.

Dolly Parton's mama worked hard as well taking care of the home and raising her children. The mother of 12 at the age of 35, Avie's health was often poor and yet she kept her house and entertained her children with songs and tales of mountain folklore. Parton credits her father for her business savvy and her mother for the musical abilities. While the family was "dirt poor" it also provided her with many stories to share. Getting her first musical outlet at the church her grand-daddy preached at when she was 6 the early gospel music would help her gain opportunities. At the young age of 13 Dolly would record her first album and perform at the Grand Old Opry.

Dolly Parton was an known as a very popular American singer but she was so much more

  • multi-instrumentalist
  • record producer
  • actress
  • author
  • businesswoman
  • philanthropist
Dolly started out writing songs for others. In 1967 she made her own album debut with 'Hello, I'm Dolly' Dolly would perform both as a solo artist and as part of a duet with Porter Wagoner. The sales and songs chart peaked during the 1970s and continued to grow into the the 1980s. Success of Dolly Parton has gained her 25 records that have been certified gold, platinum and multi platinum awards. The Billboard country music charts have her tied with another great woman in country music Reba McEntire. The list of rewards and honors goes on and on and greatly demonstrates the 40 years of performances and music ability that she has given to the world. In addition, in 1999 Dolly Parton was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame.

Performing music has helped Dolly Parton reached out to the world. It was also her great skill of writing music that helped her through out her career as well. A few of my favorite songs include "Coat of Many Colors" and "9 to 5" Yet, that is not the end of her talent as she also has received nominations from the academy awards, grammy awards, tony awards, and emmy awards for her acting skills. She has demonstrated her acting skills in films such as 9 to 5 and The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas, and Steel Magnolias.
