Goodness of Sardines

One of the most plentiful edible fish in the world is the Sardine.
Sardines live short lives during which they grow quite quickly reaching the length of about 23 cm in 2 years. Sardines were first identified during the 15th century. Sardines come primarily from the Mediterranean island of Sardinia.



If you like Worcestershire sauce did you know that sardines are in the sauce?? Another place where sardines are used that many may not realized is in Caesar Salad. Fresh sardines are showing up in many different places including some of the top restaurants. Canned sardines are being offered in grocery stores as well. Sardines have an important place in our diets and can help in many different ways:



  • Sardines are small but pack a punch. With 23 grams of protein is located with omega 3 fatty acids, calcium, iron and potassium. With only 200 calories per serving they are a great value in a diet. Canned sardines contain sodium which is something that must be noted but also have olive oil that offers goodness as well
  • Sardines are substantially fished and because of regional changes are now more abundant, healthy and well managed. 
  • Sardines are affordable and compare nicely with other proteins like canned tuna, poultry,  and ground beef 
  • Sardines represent the fishing spirit well. They look like fish because being small they are too small to fillet or grind up. . These fish have heads, tails, scales and bones. They taste like fish as well. They smell like fish
  • Sardines are easy to prepare and many consider them delicious Many recipes that are simple to prepare. 

2 (3 3/4 ounce) cans of sardines in oil, well drained
2 tablespoons homemade mayonnaise
1 teaspoon lemon juice
1 teaspoon pepper
1 to 2 teaspoons grated onion
1⁄4 teaspoon Dijon mustard
1 tablespoon minced fresh parsley

Finely mash the sardines and combine with mustard and mayonnaise.
Stir in the grated onions, lemon juice and pepper.
Sprinkle with fresh minced parsley.
Serve with crackers or vegetable sticks.

  1. I do love Sardines but didn't know there were in Worcestershire sauce as well.

  2. I am a huge fan of Worcestershire sauce and was surprised when I first learned it had Sardines in it! I am not a huge fan of seafood, but it certainly adds great flavor to Worcestershire and cesar salad dressing. Thanks for these fun facts!
