Protect Your Head

When the word Neurosurgery is said most minds will instantly think of brain surgeons. However, this is not entirely true. Neurosurgeons diagnose and treat disorders of the entire nervous system. Yes, this does include the brain but it also includes back and neck problems, as well s surgical and non surgical care. Traumatic brain injuries and concussions is some of the leading work being conducted in this subject of health care.

August is Neurosurgery Outreach Month The American Association of Neurological Surgeons established this awareness month to help bring awareness and education. Intention was also placed on informing others on how neurological injuries could be prevented. Kids, teens and professional athletes around the country are all preparing for fall sports. Emphasis should be placed on patient safety and preventing injury.

There are precautions that should be taken to prevent potential head injuries. While many head injuries do take place during sports that is not the only way. Here are some tips to help you protect yourself and your safety while reducing risk of suffering a potential head injury:

  • While playing sports head gear and helmets should be worn. The equipment should fit properly and worn at all times while engaged in physical activities of the sport
  • When under influence of alcohol or drugs do not take part in physical activities In addition if sick and tired sports should not be played
  • Sport play should not take place on uneven surfaces
  • Fields and courts should be observed for safety
  • clothing that does not impair your vision should be wore when participating in activities
  • falls of any sort should be avoided. If needed install handrails on stairs, use a stool to reach high object, use non slip mats on floors, grab bars should be in the shower, remove cords or rugs that are in the way, keep the house tidy with no obstructions.
  • a regular exercise program should be maintained to help build strength, balance and coordination
  • when driving be sure to obey all traffic signals and wear seatbelt at all times when the vehicle is moving. Children should be buckled into appropriate child safety seats
  • children should not jump on beds

At least 3 individuals a minute in the United States will sustain brain injury. This is why education and prevention is so important. Taking care of our health as well as our loved ones and those that live around us is very important. During Neurosurgery Outreach Month take the lead and follow the tips as well as encourage those around you. Questions, contact your local physician for more concerns about your health.
