Happy Birthday Coast Guard

The United States Coast Guard is one of the five US Armed Forces. The Coastguard is available during maritime, military and multi missioned service. During peace times the Department of Homeland Security leads the coast guard, during war time the US Navy other times Congress, the President and US Navy may be in charge

The coast guard was created through the U.S. Congress act signed by U.S. President Woodrow Wilson January 28, 1915. The act put together the Revenue Cutter Service as well as the U.S. Life Saving Service as well as created a single maritime service that was dedicated to saving lives at sea as well as enforcing maritime laws.

The coast guard is responsible for maintaining the U.S. lighthouses and aid in navigation. President Franklin Roosevelt announced plans to transfer the U.S. Lighthouse Services to the coast guard May 1939.
