Confederate History Month

April has been designated as Confederate History Month. The purpose of Confederate History month is to recognize and honor the history of the Confederate States of America. Like it or not these men, women and states battled for what they thought to be the way of life. As one of my history teachers told me it was not over slavery but state rights that the Civil War was primarily fought over.

The states of Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, Texas and Virginia all have recognized the day of Civil War Memorial Month. To say that Confederate History Month has been controversial due to the history of slavery in the United States does not even ice the cake. Slavery was an evil, vicious and inhumane practice that degraded human beings to property and left a stain on the soul of the state and nation. (Virginia Governer McDonnel)

The War of 1861 to 1865 many believe was fought over slavery The truth is that the North fought the war over power. The South threatened secession. It was not only the south that had slaves but many Northerners had slaves as well. The South titled the war "The War of Northern Aggression"

There were 3 different Southern flags that were used to represent the Southern States. The first flag that was used many complained to closely resembled the US flag.

The second flag was modified due to the similarity to a flag of truce. The third flag became the adopted flag of the confederacy.

The first confederate flag was known as the "Stars & Bars" The final flag was and is known as the "Southern Cross" Many think that the Confederate Battle Flag represents racism. There is much controversy about the flag and there has been a cry for the flag to be taken down. The Confederate flag was simply a battle flag and never a national flag. While it is thought to represent slavery or racism I personally do not feel that way.

Abraham Lincoln the president from the great state of Illinois went down in history known as the Great Emancipator. Many past slaves did pick up arms and fight for the south on their own. There were others that battled for the north. It became a war that all were very much part of. Without this great battle between the states would America had been different?? I guess we will never know as history has been wrote.

Organizations such as the KKK, Aryans and others continue to take history and plague the fields of Confederate Soldiers that fought under the Southern flag. The Confederate flag should not represent hate or violence but a way of proud life that many working men fought for. We should boast heritage not hate. The Sons of Confederate Veterans are a group of historical patriotic descendants of Confederate Soldiers and sailors dedicated to insuring a true history of the 1861-1865.
