Deaf History Month ++++ Juliette "Daisy" Low
Today I tie together a lady that fits into both "Deaf History Month" and "Women's History Month". Her name is Juliette "Daisy" Low:
Juliette "Daisy" Low was born in 1860 shortly before the Civil War. Her family feared the Union would take over so the family moved to Chicago to live with her grandparents. While a child she would contract 'brain fever'. She would recover but her hearing would be lost. Daisy would still graduate from Charbonnier's school where she would meet William Low.
The Low's was a wealthy family from England. William and Daisy would move to England in 1886. Her life had changed and now she was an "elegant" lady but her memories of her childhood would be forever present. She would visit and help lepers, poor and elderly
William would become ill and pass and Daisy would fulfill her desire to travel. She would travel to Scotland where she would meet Robert Baden Powell. Powell was the founder of Boy Scouts of America. This is when she became interested in forming a female version.
She would travel back to the US where she would form the Girl Scouts of America. This group would help girls to learn different things such as horticulture, wool spinning, and cooking. The main goal of the group was to make the girls feel good about their self. Her goal was achieved. The Girl Scouts would have 40,000 members in 1919
Daisy would die from cancer in 1927. Her beloved Girl Scouts of America would be at 167,000 members. Fifty years later in 1977 the group would number 3,000,000 members.
