National Freedom Day
The first day of February is always national Freedom Day. The day celebrates freedom from slavery. February 1st was the day that Abraham Lincoln signed a resolution that later was added to the constitution of the U.S. as the 13th amendment. The date was February 1st, 1865 as the president signed the amendment outlawing slavery in front of a joint house and senate. It would not be ratified by the states until December 18, 1865.
National freedom day was created by Major Richard Robert Wright Sr. Wright had been a former slave and looked upon the day with pride. His neighborhood looked up to Richard Wright as a leader of the community. On June 30, 1948 President Harry Truman would sign the bill proclaiming February 1st as the National Freedom Day in the United States. The president agreed with Major Wright that there should be a day celebrating freedom for all.
