Kitchen Chemistry :::: Red Cabbage PH Indicator

Red Cabbage water indicator

In this experiment a reddish / purple solution will turn red when acid (vinegar or lemon juice) but green when an alkali base (sodium carbonate aka washing soda) is added

You will need:
red cabbage
water
a vegetable grater
acid and alkali to test

To perform test shred the cabbage finely. Boil til the cabbage is soft. Strain cabbage pieces from water

The solution can be used as an indicator for acids and base. Cabbage water turns red when acids are added to it and green when a base is added.

Household items such as vinegar and many fruit juices such as lemon and grapefruit are acids. Many cleaning agents such as washing soda are base in nature. Milk of mag will turn the water green add vinegar to it will turn it pink. As more solids dissolve the water will turn green.
