Rhode Island

In the lineup of the 13 colonies, National Rhode Island was added to the union on October 5th 1636. Roger Williams established the Rhode Island colony when he left the colony of Massachusetts where he had been persecuted for his beliefs. The colony was created to help those seeking religious and political freedom.

Rhode Island was the first to renounce British rule. A representative from Rhode Island was not present at the Constitutional Convention in Philadelphia in 1787. Rhode Island requested a bill of rights be added to the Constitution before signing. After the constitution was ratified after the threat of taxation and was ratified by nine other states that Rhode Island became the 13th state.

Rhode Island found riches when in the mid 1800s that Samuel Slater founded the first textile mill. Producing cloth would become a lucrative national and export business for Rhode Island . Rhode Island is the smallest state of the 13 original colonies. It is over 400 miles of coast line in the 1212 square miles of the state. Numerous public and private beaches can be found in Rhode Island with amazing ocean views as well
