Bacon Wrapped Sea Scallops



Serves: 6 - 12
Prep time: 10 minutes
Cooking time: 6 minutes
Direct Heat: 500F
What you'll need:
  • 12 large sea scallops
  • 6 - 12 slices uncooked bacon (depends on size of scallops)
  • 1 tablespoon crushed peppercorns
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon freshly grated lemon peel
  • 2 teaspoons garlic powder
  • 1/4 cup melted butter (for basting)
  • 12 wooden toothpicks (soaked in a glass of water 1 hr before use)

Step 1:
Lay paper towels on a microwave-safe plate and place 6 strips of bacon on it, covered with more paper towel.
Microwave on high for about 2 minutes and 30 seconds or just until it's about 1/2 cooked.
In general this sea scallop recipe only requires 1 strip of bacon for 2 scallops. Depending on the size of the scallops you may need more bacon.

When the bacon is cool enough to handle with your bare hands, place it in a resealable plastic bag.
Add the crushed peppercorns, brown sugar, garlic and lemon peel and seal the bag.
Shake and manipulate the bag well so all the bacon strips are covered in this mixture.
Place the bag in a refrigerator until ready to use.

Step 2:
Rinse the thawed sea scallops under cold water and blot dry carefully with paper towel.
Wrap enough of the seasoned bacon around a sea scallop so it's fully wrapped and secure with a water-soaked toothpick.
Repeat this with the rest of the scallops.

Step 3:
Preheat the grill to 500F, clean and oil the grates.
Brush the top side of each bacon-wrapped scallop with a little melted butter and place them butter side down on the hot grates.
Brush some melted butter on top of each scallop.
Close the lid and cook for about 3 minutes.

Lift the lid and with a fork gently pry a scallop up from the grill, if they are browning up and have distinct grill marks them carefully flip the scallops over.
Brush the top with more melted butter and close the lid.
Cook another 3 minutes. 
Don't overcook this sea scallop recipe. When they have a nice grill pattern on both sides and have turned opaque they're ready to remove from the grill.

  1. Angie these look delicious hubby would love them. I'll have to use beef bacon as he's allergic to pork. We actually have scallops shipped to us from Alaska and there huge I'd need two slices of bacon to make it all the way around them. Thanks for stopping by Creative Cain Cabin today.
