National Drive Thru Day

National Drive Thru Day is observed on July 24th. People have enjoyed drive thru service since the 1930s. It is considered a major convenience and some thing my kids do not like. They would rather go in take a seat and enjoy a meal at the table. That does not mean that someone in this family does not use the convince of the drive thru whenever possible.

Drive Thru a bit of trivia:
There are more than 211000 fast food restaurants in the U.S.
The drive thru format was pioneered in the U.S. for banking services
The first drive thru restaurant the Jack In the Box sold hamburgers for 18 cents each
Restaurants, coffee shops, pharmacies and more service use drive thru windows

A drive - through or drive thru is a type of service provided by a business that allows customers to purchase products without leaving their cars. Jordan Martin created the first drive thru format in the U.S. in the 1930s for a bank in St. Louis Missouri Since that time it has spread to other countries as well.

The drive through helps to direct the cars by creating a line that moves in one direction. The goal is to reach the microphone where the order is placed. The end goal is to pick up from the person at the window. The only time that a car may have to park at a drive through is if staff is not keeping up with orders or the order placed was too big.

The drive through has replaced the days of the car hop that would bring the order to the parked car and the customer would stay in the car to eat. Drive throughs can be found in most american fast food chains.

  3. We don't have half as many drive-throughs here as in America. Not even all our fast food places have them, and certainly none of the banks, as far as I know.

  4. Apart from Burger King & Mc Donalds we have no real drive thrus in Tenerife. They are very associated with fast food, which I am not a fan of so I am not phased by this. The history is interesting though.
