Reye Syndrome
Reye's Syndrome is a deadly disease that strikes swiftly and can attack any child, teen or adult without warning. It affects the body organs but attacks the liver and brain the most. The cause of reye syndrome is still an unknown researches have been able to show that there is a connection between the disease and the use of aspirin and other over the counter medications.
Reye syndrome symptoms are almost always preceded by a viral illness, (a cold, flu, etc...) a diarrhea, or chickenpox. Many cases seem to be mild or undetected or they can be severe and require medical attention. Following such illness Reye Syndrome is not contagious and symptoms include frequent vomiting, sleepiness, irritability or aggressive behavior. In infants they may also have diarrhea and rapid breathing. Later stages of the syndrome symptoms may include irrational behavior, confusion, severe muscle weakness, seizures and loss of consciousness. Fever is not normally present. Dangerous symptoms including changes in vision, difficulty hearing and abnormal speech may also appear.
While very rare with only a few cases a year reported in the U.S. It should still be watched in children with frequent vomiting or a change in mental status or behavior that occurs after a recent viral illness.
