AF Awareness Month - The Silent Condition

September is Atrial Fibrillation Awareness Month. My mother and daughter both suffer from Afib. I believe a month of awareness will help others aware of this very common but yet unknown condition. Afib is an irregular heart beat that can lead to serious complications such as dementia, heart failure, stroke or even death. It is a silent condition that many do not realize they have and many that have it do not realize the seriousness of the affliction. Healthcare providers may minimize the effects of the condition.

September is Afib month and is a great time for patients and healthcare providers learn more about this complex condition. The longer someone has afib is more likely they will convert from intermittent to being in it all the time which means that it becomes harder to stop or cure.

StopAfib.org worked to have the month registered as Afib awareness. In 2008, more professionals and organizations led by the American heart Association asked congress to make the holiday official. In 2009 the holiday was declared official.
